Overview of The Gospel of John:

The Gospel of John is written by one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee. This Gospel is 21 Chapters long.  John is described as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus loved”.  It has been determined by biblical scholars that John wrote The Gospel of John (also known as “According to John”).

It was written around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after he witnesses Jesus’ earthly ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and as an eyewitness in composing the gospel. He is not John the Baptist. However, in this book, John the Baptist is discussed.

The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation. It establishes his deity as Creator of the World, The Father (I AM), and is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh.

Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God (I AM), believers are to understand that Jesus is the Son of God that came in the flesh and yet while we were sinners, died for our sins and rose again to become Savior of the World-reconnecting us to God. That is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ’s name.

Defeating death and sin by the shedding of his blood and life, Jesus gives the gift of everlasting life with repentance. That by believing you may have life in his name (20:31)  John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

God is omnipresent meaning he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.

Revelation 19:6  “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thundering, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Overview of Chapter Seven

In this lesson, students will explore the events in John Chapter 7, where Jesus teaches at the Feast of Tabernacles and reveals more about His identity and mission. We will look at the various reactions to Jesus’ teachings, the disbelief of His own brothers, and the division among the people about whether

He is truly the Messiah. Jesus brothers are James, Simon, Judas, and Joses (Matthew 13:55). Students will gain a deeper understanding of Jesus’ offer of the Holy Spirit, His perfect timing, and His challenge to religious leaders.

In John Chapter 7, Jesus walks in Galilee while the Feast of Tabernacles approaches. His brothers, who do not believe in Him, urge Him to go to the feast, but Jesus tells them He will not go with them because the world hates Him for testifying against its evil. After His brothers leave, Jesus secretly goes to the feast alone and teaches in the temple.

At the feast, Jesus offers “living waters,” representing the Holy Spirit, to those who believe in Him for eternal life. The people are divided in their opinions about Him. Some recognize that He comes from the line of David, while others doubt because He is from Galilee, not realizing He was born in Bethlehem, as prophesied about the Messiah.

Despite the Chief Priests sending officers to arrest Him, the officers do not because they are amazed by His words and teaching, knowing He had no formal education.

Nicodemus, a Pharisee, challenges the religious leaders by asking if their law condemns someone without first hearing from him. Yet, many still refuse to believe a prophet could come from Galilee, overlooking the prophecy about the Messiah. Throughout, Jesus follows the perfect timing of God, often stating, “My time has not yet come.”

Time: 35 minutes to complete lesson: 20 minutes to read the entire post and take the interactive quiz, additional 15 minutes to review video resources and comment on social media.

Objectives Chapter Seven  (What you will learn)

A. How Jesus identified the hatred against him as spiritual. Today, believers are to know our enemies are spiritual as well.

B. Jesus demonstrates supernatural wisdom from God.  Jesus did not speak of his own authority. (see *James  1:5 below)

C. The confusion, as to why some believed in Jesus’ teachings and some did not.

(*James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”)

Outline for Chapter Seven:

1. Jesus identifies the hatred against him and his teaching as spiritual, even though the police were after him.

2. Jesus displays supernatural wisdom.  He reads doctrines and speaks of many things. He is not educated.

3. We are to judge not according to appearance but judge righteous judgment.

4. Jesus offers “living waters” to believers, referring to the Holy Spirit.

5. Many believed in him and some did not because of his birthplace and teaching,  The police do not arrest him because they are impressed by Jesus.

6.  Nicodemus asks the Chief priests of the Pharisees that they should hear Jesus out and find out what he is doing before arresting him.

Reflection:

Can you remember a specific time you needed to know something or needed help studying, so you prayed for wisdom and knowledge and it was received? For example, when I call companies for information or customer service, I always pray that I ask the right questions, give the right information, get a representative who knows their job well, and one that will help me in order to get my problem solved. It works. :}   Post all comments below in the comment section or on ePrayer Circle’s new social media Facebook or eprayercircle.com

Highlights of Chapter Seven  KJV Answers to Objectives and Quiz Questions

Jesus identified the hatred against him as spiritual. Today, believers are to know our enemies are spiritual as well.

1After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

2Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.

3His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

4For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

5For neither did his brethren believe in him.

6Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

8Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.

9When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

10But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

11Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

12And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

13Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

Jesus demonstrates supernatural wisdom from God.  Jesus did not speak of his own authority. (see *James  1:5 below)

15And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself

18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him

The confusion, as to why some believed in Jesus’ teachings and some did not.

John 7:12-14And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

13Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

15And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

20The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

21Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

22Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

25Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

26But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

27Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

28Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

29But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

30Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

31And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

32The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

33Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

35Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

36What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

Jesus declares that anyone that believes in him out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

John 7:38-40 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

40Many of the people, therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth, this is the Prophet.

John 7: 41-44  41Others said This is the Christ. But some said Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

42Hath, not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

43So there was a division among the people because of him.

44And some of them would have taken him, but no man laid hands on him.

45Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

46The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

47Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

48Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

49But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

50Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)

51Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

53And every man went unto his own house.
