Daily Word: Inhale the Future and Exhale the Past: A Breath of Fresh Forgiveness

Life is a journey, and sometimes we carry heavy burdens from past hurts or mistakes. The Bible teaches us the importance of forgiveness, not just for others but also for ourselves. Holding onto pain can weigh us down, but letting go can set us free.

In Matthew 18:21-22 (KJV), Peter asks Jesus, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?” Jesus replies, “I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” This means that we should forgive endlessly, just as God forgives us.

Another powerful example of forgiveness is found in John 23:33-34 (KJV). As Jesus was being crucified, He prayed for those who were harming Him, saying, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Even in His suffering, Jesus showed us the way of forgiveness.

But what happens when we don’t forgive? Psychologically, unforgiveness can have serious effects. Research shows that holding onto anger and resentment can lead to higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.

In fact, a study by Toussaint, Worthington, and Williams (2015) found that people who struggle to forgive themselves often experience lower self-esteem and increased levels of depression. This can also negatively affect relationships with others, leading to feelings of isolation and difficulty trusting people.

Here are three things you can do to forgive others:

  1. Acknowledge the Hurt: Recognize and accept the pain caused by the person. This is the first step in letting go.
  2. Pray for Strength: Ask God to help you forgive. Praying for the person who hurt you can soften your heart.
  3. Release the Anger: Let go of the need for revenge. Remember, forgiveness is more about freeing yourself than the other person.

And here are three steps to forgive yourself:

  1. Accept Responsibility: Acknowledge your mistakes without making excuses. This allows you to learn and grow.
  2. Seek God’s Forgiveness: Pray and ask God for forgiveness. Trust that He forgives you completely.
  3. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with the same grace you would offer to a friend.

Forgiveness is like a breath of fresh air. Inhale the future, full of hope and possibilities. Exhale the past, letting go of pain and regrets. By forgiving others and ourselves, we open the door to peace, healing, and healthier relationships.
