Overview of the Gospel of Matthew

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew. He wrote it for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER NINE

Some sicknesses are related to sin. Jesus has the power to forgive sins.   Matthew 9:2  “And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.   Matthew 9:6 KJV  “But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

Jesus calls Matthew a tax collector to discipleship.  Jesus told Matthew to “follow me” and he did.   Jesus sat with sinners and ate with them. Matthew 9:11  “And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?”  Matthew 9:12-13KJV  12But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

The disciples did not fast. It was a custom for righteous people and leaders to fast.  Jesus explains that they did not need to fast because he is with them. His spirit with power is with them and is sufficient.   You will learn that Jesus has the power to raise people from the dead as he resurrected with a touch the ruler’s daughter.

Jesus went to a ruler’s house to see his daughter whom everyone said was dead.  Jesus said she was not dead.  Matthew 9:24  “He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.”   He touched her hand and she rose.  Jesus became famous all abroad.

A woman was healed with just one touch of Jesus’ garment from an issue of blood that she had for 12 years.  Jesus noticed the power that left his body when his garment was touched.  She admitted to touching him for healing.   Matthew 9:22 KJV  “But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.”

Jesus requires faith in him for a healing miracle to take place.  Two blind men asked Jesus to heal them. He asked them did they think he could do it. They replied, Yes, Lord.  Matthew 9:29  “Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

The miracle Jesus performed that had never been seen before.   Matthew 9: 32-33 KJV  32As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.  Jesus cast out the devils and the man spoke.  No one had seen this before and this miracle made Jesus famous throughout the region.

Jesus told the disciples to pray for laborers because the people needed help.  Matthew 9: 36-38 KJV   36But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; 38Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.  Note: Jesus is telling his followers and believers to pray for what they need in doing the Lord’s work.

Being kind, talking, and listening (conversation) to people help others get through tough times.  Some people don’t have anyone to talk to but do not show or tell it.  This is common among seniors.  Are you participating as a laborer in the harvest?  Do you help and protect the motherless and fatherless using the word of God?  Do you help seniors or widows in any way?
