Overview of the Gospel of Matthew

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew. He wrote it for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER SEVEN

Jesus taught “Judge not, that ye be not judged, about judging people.

Note:  This scripture does not mean you should not have discernment. It is good to have truthful assessments ” distinguishing the difference between holy and unholy” under the guidance of the holy spirit.  Leviticus 10:10 KJV  “And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;”

Jesus warned believers not to give holy things to dogs or unsaved people.   Note: There were places Jesus could not perform many miracles because there was no belief. When he taught, and his teachings were rejected, he said it was because those listening did not believe and hated the truth.

John 8:43-47KJV   43Why do ye not understand my speech?  6because ye cannot hear my word. 44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar and the father of it. 45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46Which of you convince me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? 47He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye, therefore, hear them not, because ye are not of God.

Jesus’s made a promise to those who believe and pray for manifestations of solutions to their needs. Matthew 7:8 KJV  For every one that ask receives; and he that seeks finds, and to him that knocks it shall be opened.”  Jesus taught how to identify false prophets.  Matthew 7:20 KJV  “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”

Note. Fruit does not necessarily refer to children but includes what you generate from your love for God. Your works cannot save you but saved folks do exploits (works).     Daniel 11:32  “And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.”  “The definition of an exploit is a heroic act or an act worthy of praise”.  This definition is from Oxford language dictionary.    Exploit can also mean a good deed.

Jesus compared people who do the will of God to a wise man that builds his house on a rock that withstands all storms.  He compared people who do not do the will of God to a foolish man who builds his house on sand, that washes away in a storm.  The house on the rock is built on a strong foundation, the words of God.

Highlights

 1.  You will learn the command of Jesus about judging people. Matthew 7:1-4 KJV

Matthew 7:1 1Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3And why behold thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but consider not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?  “Thou hypocrite first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Note:  This however does not mean you should not have discernment. It is good to have truthful assessments ” distinguishing the difference between holy and unholy” under the guidance of the holy spirit.  Leviticus 10:10 KJV  “And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;”  In other words, you should know right from wrong.

 2.  YoYou will learn why you should not give holy things to dogs or unsaved people. Matthew 7:6 KJV

Matthew 7:6  “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Note: There were places Jesus could not perform many miracles because there was no belief. When he taught, and his teachings were rejected, he said it was because those listening who did not believe hated the truth. John 8:43-47KJV   43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

 3. You will learn Jesus’s promise to those who believe and pray for manifestations for the solution to problems.   Matthew 7: 7-14 KJV

7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8For every one that asks – receives; and he that seeks – finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. 9Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

11If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? 12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.   13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

 4.  You will learn how to identify false prophets.   Matthew 7:15-20 KJV

15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles? 17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. 20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

 5.  You will learn what Jesus compared people to, who do and do not do the will of God.  Matthew 7:21-27 KJV

21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
