Overview of the Gospel of Matthew

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew. He wrote it for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

45 Days To Read The Gospel Challenge – The Gospel of Matthew Chapter Six:  Do not let the right hand know what the left is doing
alms

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER SIX

Jesus taught on “The Sermon on the Mount” concerning good deeds “giving” or Almsgiving. When a good deed is performed, we are not to tell anyone. If you lend money or do a favor for someone, don’t go around announcing it. For the Lord says, then you have your reward.  Instead, do not let the right hand know what the left is doing. Thy Father which sees in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Jesus taught us how to pray: enter into your closets,. shut the door, and pray in secret.  He taught us how to fast.  Anoint thy head with oil and wash your face as to appear as if you are not fasting.  Thy Father which sees in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Lay your treasure up in heaven, not on earth.  In other words, do not want for everything of material possession.  Some people want the most expensive cars, expensive jewelry, and fine clothes that cost too much. They will kill to be the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.  Only what you do for the Lord (love) will last.  Matthew 6: 19-20 KJV  19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Note: 1 Timothy 6:10 KJV  “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

No man can serve two masters.  24“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”   Note:  Joshua 24:15  “And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Anxiety about worldly things is forbidden.  Jesus demanded that believers should seek  “The kingdom of God” first.  31Therefore, take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:)Your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. 34Take, therefore, no thought for tomorrow: for the tomorrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthew6:20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Reflection question:

Consider the following scripture: Matthew 6:28-30 KJV  28Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30Wherefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

When I was a child and worried about school, test grades, and not knowing the answer to a question that the teacher might ask me, my mother said to me,  “The things you worry about the most, usually never happen, so don’t worry”.  Time and time again as a child this was a great comfort because I found it to be true.  Even if it did happen, it was never as bad as I would make it out to be in my mind.

Do you have a testimony, when you trusted God because you could not see a way out of no way and he came through?

Highlights

1.  The Sermon on the Mount continued: Almsgiving,  Matthew 6:1-4 KJV

1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.  Note: Alms means to give something to help the poor.  It could be money, time, food, housing, loan, etc. Jesus is saying do not boast for in your boasting you have received your reward.

2.  Prayer and fasting   Matthew 5-18 KJV

5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8Be, not ye, therefore, like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him.

9After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread. 11Give us this day our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 14For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head and wash thy face;  18That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

3.  Where our treasure is to be laid up.  Matthew 6:19-23 KJV

19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye is single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23But if thine eye is evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

4. No man can serve two masters.  Matthew 6:24 KJV

24“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

5. Anxiety about worldly things forbidden.  Matthew 6: 25-30KJV

25Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30Wherefore if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

6. Seek thee The kingdom of God first.  Matthew 6: 31-34 KJV

31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. 34Take, therefore, no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
