The Seven Letters to the Church. Instructions to Revive the Church and Restore the Grace of God.
According to the Book of Revelation in the King James Bible, Jesus Christ instructs John of Patmos to send seven letters to seven churches. The letters are pointing out the sin and errors that each church needs to correct and repent. Some of the letters came with death threats: Revelation 1:11KJV “Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, what thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.”
Jesus Christ is the head of the church. When a person accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, he or she immediately becomes a believer and joins the church that is ruled by our High Priest, Jesus Christ. Each one of us is a member of Jesus Christ’s universal church (bride). When we walk outside under the heavens as believers, we step into God’s sanctuary. Upon the return of Christ, he will come for his universal church and all the churches (that are also a part of the universal church) in his name. He will come for all the people who pray, praise and repent in his name (some people are not members of brick-and-mortar churches).
Jesus declares, his father’s house, the church, as a place of prayer and worship. The seven letters are commanding the angels of each church to govern the churches differently unto repentance. However, some individual members of fallen churches, who have kept the faith, are promised rewards and eternity.
Note: In this editor’s opinion, I think the sign that most churches are closed should be of great concern. We should live our lives without anxiety and fear but at the same time, let’s make sure we prepare ourselves, loved ones, and our families for what is promised to come — salvation is free. Matthew 24:36 36But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
Matthew 24:37 34Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. 35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 36But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37But as the days of Noe {Noah} were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. 38For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe {Noah} entered into the ark, 39And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Revelation 1:8 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 2:7 “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” Each church is assigned an angel. A letter was sent to the angel of each church.
- To the angel of the church of Ephesus (loveless church), Jesus approved of their works, labor, and patience. He knew they did not bear evil and rebuked false prophets. They hated the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which he hated also. They labored and bore patience in his namesake but he held one thing against them. One thing that they needed to repent or he would remove them. They left their first love. He warned them to repent and to do their first works.
Revelation 2: 1-6 KJV 1Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2I know thy works, and thy labor, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not, and hast found them, liars:
3And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast labored, and hast not fainted. 4Nevertheless, I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love. 5Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. 6But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
2. To the angel of the church of Smyrna (persecuted Church), Jesus knew the struggle of the church, it’s tribulation and poverty in a rich city that boasts science and medicine. The church suffered greatly because the city of Smyrna was devoted to Caesar (Roman emperor) and worshipped him. Jesus also knew there were spies among them that were Jews physically but not true Jews but pagans who aligned with other pagans to put Christians and their faith to death. Therefore, these Jews worked for Satan who used Judaism as his weapon. Judaism rejected Jesus Christ as the Messiah. The Church is warned that some of them will be thrown into jail for ten days and killed but if they are faithful unto death, they would have overcometh and shall have the crown of life (everlasting life).
Revelation 2: 8-11 KJV 8And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; 9I know thy works and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 10Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. 11He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
3. A letter was sent to the angel of the church in Pergamos (compromising church). Jesus knew the church had held fast to the faith and did not deny him even when members were being slain. He knew they were surrounded by a Gentile base of false religion and idols. The city had statues of false gods called Zeus and Asklepoisus (healing) and many superstitious practices devised by Satan. However, Jesus held a few things against the church. The church allowed Balaam to send Moab women to seduce them (Israelites) into intermarriages that celebrated these false Gods. At the feasts, they ate things sacrificed unto idols thereby committing fornication against God. Nicolaitans doctrine was similar. This church upheld it and God hated it. If they did not repent, Jesus would fight against them. He that overcomes would receive hidden manna and a new name which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Revelation 2: 12-17 12And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; 13I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. 14But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a white stone and in the stone, a new name is written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
4. A letter was sent to the angel of the church in Thyatira (corrupt church). “I know thy works and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. 20Notwithstanding, I have a few things against thee because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach, seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. The famous Jezebel went to bed with God’s servant. She also taught them about other Gods. She was a harlot. To those who overcome and keep my works until the end, Jesus promised power over the nations and the morning star.
Revelation 2: 8-29 18And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; 19I know thy works and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. 20Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
21And I gave her space to repent of her fornication, and she repented not. 22Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23And I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 24But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burdens.
25But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 26And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28And I will give him the morning star. 29He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
5. A letter was sent to the angel of the church in Sardis (dead church). This church did not meet Jesus’ approval. He told them to repent or he would destroy them. He almost gave this church an obituary. This church was populated by unredeemed people or unsaved people. Jesus warned, if they did not repent, he would come upon them as a thief. However, there were a few members who had not defiled their garments and were worthy. These would be saved and walk with Jesus in white. For those who overcame, they would be clothed in white raiment. Their names will be in the book of life, confessed before his father, and before his angels.
Revelation 3: 1-6 1And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 2Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 3Remember, therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 4Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments, and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. 5He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment, and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. 6He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
6. A letter was sent to the angel of the church of Philadelphia (faithful church). Jesus knew their works. They were faithful, they had not denied his name. They waited on the lord and were patient. They were not going to take the test that will try the world. They are given crowns. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God. God will claim them with honor. They have an open door for eternity and no one can take it away. He will give the members the seal of God on their foreheads. They will be marked with the name of God, the city of God and Jesus Christ new name. The city that will come out of heaven and be on the new earth.
Revelation 3: 7-11 7And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 8I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. 9Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. 10Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 11Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. 12Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
7. A letter was sent to the angel of the church of Laodiceans (lukewarm church). Jesus said this church was not hot or cold but lukewarm, so he will spit it out of his mouth. The church was made up of members who said they knew Christ but really did not know him. They did not reject him either. Jesus wanted to come in and get to know them so they would have zeal. God loves to convert. The church thought they were doing well but they were not. God wants his children to be on fire for him. In other words, to thirst for him, bear fruit for the kingdom but most of all take the time to get to know him and love him passionately as he loves us. He wants to be invited in. This is the type of relationship nonbelievers cannot experience nor understand. They are always looking for proof of God but he clearly demonstrates here, he is not hiding but he is a God of Spirit and Truth. He says invite me in and I will dine with you. Those who overcome and develop a personal relationship with him are invited to sit with him in his throne.
Revelation 3: 14-2014And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou were cold or hot. 16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come into him and will sup with him, and he with me. 21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
In conclusion, Jesus Christ instructs John of Patmos to send seven letters to the angels of the seven churches in Asia. The letters are pointing out the sin and errors that each church needs to correct and repent: Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.” The letters pointed out the sins of being busy with works and forgetting to put God first; not being faithful through persecution; mixing with other cultures who worshipped idols and eating food sacrificed to these idols; marrying people who worshipped false gods; tolerating Jezebel and partaking of sexual fornication, and her teachings of idols-fornication; allowing the church to be populated with people that are not saved or redeemed; being lukewarm by not being on fire for God; not bearing fruit, or increasing the church because they were too comfortable; and having church but not inviting Jesus Christ. 6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
