The Gospel consists of the four books in the New Testament that gives the teachings of Jesus Christ, written by John, Luke, Mark, and Matthew.

Overview of the Gospel of Matthew:

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew. He wrote it for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

Summary of  lesson one and lesson two

Chapter One

Jesus was often called “The Son of David” because he was born of the Virgin Mary.  Mary and her husband Joseph were both from the lineage of King David.  Matthew 1:17  “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.”  Matthew tells of a prophetic word that told of Jesus’ birth.

Matthew 1:23  “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”  It is interesting to note that Joseph wanted to divorce Mary quietly because of her pregnancy.  But an angel came to him and verified that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Ghost.  Therefore, Joseph stayed married to Mary and did not consummate the marriage until Jesus Christ was born.

Note: Jesus Christ is a name translated. It is accepted by God.  Philippians 2:9 KJV  “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name:”  There are many names people call Jesus but it is only one name to be used because if you mispronounce those other names (thinking that is the original name) then you are not calling on the Lord.  It is known that what we pronounce today is not the way it was pronounced then.  Develop a personal relationship with the Lord and you will know his name is Jesus Christ (the blood sacrifice).  He is the God of the living.  Psalms 100:3 KJV  Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Chapter Two

There was a prophecy that baby Jesus is to be  “The king of the Jews” and a star will shine when he was born so that three wise men will see the star.  Later, upon Jesus’ crucifixion, Jesus was named “King of Jews” in a mockery manner. The mockery brought on the destruction of Jerusalem as predicted.

It had been prophesized  that  Matthew 2:6  “And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, art not the least among the princes of Judea: for out of thee shall come to a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.”  The wise men never returned to Herod to betray the location of Jesus.  Herod was so angry that he ordered all children under two years of age to be killed in an effort to find and kill the baby Jesus.  Again fulfilling a prophecy,  Matthew 2:17-18 KJV 17Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18In Rama, a voice is heard, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
