OVERVIEW OF THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew about 15 years after the Gospel of Mark around 85 CE (Common Era).  After Mark, Matthew, Luke was written and then The Gospel of John.  Matthew wrote his Gospel for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah. His work supports around 70 old prophesies.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

Summary of Gospel of Matthew – Chapter 2

Jesus was born in “Bethlehem of Judaea” (also spelled Judea, or Judah) a small town near Jerusalem in the days of Herod the king. Three wise men from the east to Jerusalem came to see the baby, Jesus.  The three wise men saw the star in the east that guided them to his location.  Note:  The star is known as The Star of Bethlehem, or Christmas Star.  Jesus is also known as the morning star.   Revelation 22″16 KJV

King Herod also known as ” Herod the Great”, was a Roman king of Judaea. He sent the wise men and told them to locate Jesus and tell him where he was so he could worship him but actually, he wanted to find Jesus to kill him.  The three men went and found Mary and Joseph.  They saw the baby Jesus and fell down and worshipped him. They presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.  Gifts fit for a king.  Matthew 2:2 “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”

Note: There was a prophecy that this baby would be the king of the Jews and a star will shine when he was born so the wise man saw the star.  Later upon Jesus Crucifixion, Jesus was named King of Jews in a mockery manner. The mockery brought on the destruction of Jerusalem as predicted.

It had been prophesized  that  Matthew 2:6  “And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, art not the least among the princes of Judea: for out of thee shall come to a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.”  The wise men never returned to Herod to betray the location of Jesus.  Herod was so angry that he ordered all children under two years of age was to be slain in an effort to find Jesus.  Again fulfilling a prophecy.  Matthew 2:17-18 KJV 17Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

An angel advised Mary and Joseph to flee with the child to safety.

Matthew 2: 14-23  14When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.  After Herod’s death, Joseph and his family return from Egypt and dwell in Nazareth. 23 “And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.”

Reflection question:

The stars in the skies have always been a beautiful and amazing wonder. It was a star- the star in the east-  that let everyone know Jesus was born.  Jesus is also known as the bright and morning star.   It was prophesized.  Do you know any of the stars in heaven?  Which is your favorite?

1.  What prophecy brought three wise men to see the baby, Jesus.  Matthew 2: 1-10 KJV

1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall become a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

7Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy

2.  You will learn that the three wise men worship baby Jesus and brought gifts fit for a king.  Matthew 2: 11 KJV

Matthew 2:11  “And when they came into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”

3.  You will learn why Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt with baby Jesus.  Matthew 2:  13-18 KJV

13And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. 17Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

4.  You will learn the treacherous act of Herod committed in order to find and kill baby Jesus.  Matthew 2: 16 KJV

Matthew 2:16 “Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.”

17Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

5.  You will learn why Jesus was named by the prophets a Nazarene.  Matthew 2:19-23 KJV

19But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appears in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life

.21And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: 23And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
