Overview of The Gospel of Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew was written by the apostle Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. Matthew was a former tax collector, called by Jesus to follow Him. His Gospel is believed to have been written between 50-70 AD, and it is the first book in the New Testament, even though it may not have been the first Gospel written. Matthew’s account emphasizes that Jesus is the promised Messiah and King, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies.

Matthew’s Gospel begins with a genealogy that traces Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham and King David, highlighting Jesus’ royal and Jewish heritage. It then moves into the story of Jesus’ miraculous birth, His baptism by John the Baptist, and the start of His ministry.

Mary and her husband Joseph were both from the lineage of King David.  Matthew 1:17  “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.”  Matthew tells of a prophetic word that told of Jesus’ birth.

Matthew 1:23  “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”  It is interesting to note that Joseph wanted to divorce Mary quietly because of her pregnancy.  But an angel came to him and verified that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Ghost.  Therefore, Joseph stayed married to Mary and did not consummate the marriage until Jesus Christ was born.

Note: Jesus Christ is a name translated in the English versions. It is accepted by God. For this purpose these studies are on the English speaking version.   Philippians 2:9 KJV  “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name:”  There are many names people call Jesus but it is only one name to be saved by. If you mispronounce other names (thinking that is the original name) then you are not calling on the Lord.

It is known that what we pronounce today is not the way it was pronounced then.  Develop a personal relationship with the Lord and you will know he answers to the name name  Jesus Christ (the blood sacrifice).  He is the God of the living.  Psalms 100:3 KJV Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

The Gospel of Matthew is known for including many of Jesus’ key teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about love, humility, prayer, and the Kingdom of God. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus performs miracles, heals the sick, and casts out demons, showing His divine authority.

Matthew also places a strong emphasis on Jesus’ role as a teacher and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. He frequently references the Scriptures to show how Jesus’ life and mission align with what was foretold about the Messiah. The Gospel also includes Jesus’ parables, teachings on discipleship, and warnings about the final judgment.

The story of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection is the heart of the Gospel. Matthew ends with the Great Commission, where Jesus commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, spreading the message of salvation.

In summary, the Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the promised Messiah, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the King of all nations, whose life, death, and resurrection bring salvation to the world.

Note From Editor: The name “Jesus Christ” is an English translation, and it is accepted by God. Philippians 2:9 KJV  says, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.” People call Jesus by many praise names, but only one name is called upon for salvation by English speaking people and that is Jesus Christ. If you mispronounce other names thinking they are the original, you might not be calling on the Lord.

Language has changed over time, but when you have a personal relationship with Jesus, you will know that the name  Jesus Christ, the Savior is accepted by God.  The Holy spirit bears witness. Jesus gave His life for us.  Psalm 100:3 reminds us, “Know ye that the Lord, He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.”

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER NINE

Matthew Chapter 9 reveals the power and authority of Jesus over sin, sickness, death, and evil spirits. Throughout this chapter, we see Jesus perform miraculous healings, call a sinner to discipleship, and teach important lessons about faith, forgiveness, and the need for laborers to help with God’s work. This chapter emphasizes that faith in Jesus is essential for miracles to happen, and it also highlights His compassion for those who are lost and in need of spiritual guidance.

Jesus Forgives Sins and Heals the Paralyzed Man: A paralyzed man was brought to Jesus, and seeing the faith of those who brought him, Jesus said, “Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.” Some sicknesses are related to sin, and Jesus has the authority to forgive sins. To prove His authority, Jesus then said to the man, “Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house,” and the man was healed.   Matthew 9:6 KJV  “But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

Note: This shows that Jesus has the power both to heal sickness and to forgive sins.

Jesus Calls Matthew and Eats with Sinners: Jesus called Matthew, a tax collector, to follow Him, and Matthew immediately obeyed. Jesus then ate with publicans and sinners, which upset the Pharisees. Jesus responded, “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick… for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Note: Jesus shows mercy to those who are spiritually sick, offering them repentance and healing.

The Power of Jesus to Raise the Dead: A ruler asked Jesus to help his daughter, who was said to be dead. When Jesus arrived, He said, “The maid is not dead, but sleepeth.” The crowd mocked Him, but Jesus took the girl’s hand, and she rose from the dead, making Him famous throughout the region.

The Woman Healed by Touching Jesus’ Garment: A woman who had been suffering from an issue of blood for 12 years touched Jesus’ garment, believing she would be healed. Jesus felt power leave His body and said, “Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole.” The woman was healed instantly.

Note: This teaches that faith in Jesus can bring about miraculous healing.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men: Two blind men asked Jesus to heal them. Jesus asked if they believed He could do it, and they said, “Yes, Lord.” Jesus then touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith be it unto you,” and their sight was restored.

Note: Jesus requires faith for His healing miracles to take place.

Jesus Casts Out a Demon from a Mute Man: Jesus encountered a man who could not speak because he was possessed by a demon. Jesus cast out the demon, and the man spoke. This miracle amazed everyone because such a thing had never been seen before.  Matthew 9: 32-33 KJV  32As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.  Jesus cast out the devils and the man spoke.  No one had seen this before and this miracle made Jesus famous throughout the region.

Note: Jesus demonstrated His power over evil spirits, showing that nothing is impossible for Him.

Jesus’ Compassion and Call for Laborers: Jesus saw the multitudes of people and had compassion on them because they were lost and without spiritual direction, like sheep without a shepherd. He told His disciples, “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.”

Matthew 9: 36-38 KJV   36But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; 38Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.  Note: Jesus is telling his followers and believers to pray for what they need in doing the Lord’s work.

Note: Jesus encourages His followers to pray for more workers to help spread the gospel and meet the spiritual needs of the people.

Being kind, talking, and listening (conversation) to people help others get through tough times.  Some people don’t have anyone to talk to but do not show or tell it.  This is common among seniors.  Are you participating as a laborer in the harvest?  Do you help and protect the motherless and fatherless using the word of God?  Do you help seniors or widows in any way?

23And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,

28And when he came into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

36But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

 37Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few;

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
