Overview of The Gospel of Mark
The Gospel of Mark, written by Mark John (also known as “John” in the Book of Acts), is one of the four Gospels in the New Testament. Mark was a close companion of the disciple Peter, who referred to him as his spiritual son.
Although Mark did not walk with Jesus personally, he closely followed Peter and recorded much of what Peter witnessed during Jesus’ ministry.
This Gospel is often called the “Memoirs of Peter” because of Mark’s close relationship with him. It was written between A.D. 50-70, before the Book of Acts, and is thought to have been written in Italy.
Mark’s Gospel focuses heavily on the miracles that Jesus performed throughout His ministry in Galilee, showing Jesus’ power over sickness, demons, and nature. Unlike other Gospels, Mark emphasizes Jesus’ human nature, highlighting His emotions and physical limitations.
This portrayal of Jesus helps believers understand that He is familiar with the struggles and challenges of being human and can fully sympathize with our problems and situations.
Mark’s work was an important source for the Gospel of Luke, as Luke borrowed many notes from it. Overall, the Gospel of Mark presents a powerful narrative of Jesus’ ministry, filled with miracles and moments that reveal both His divinity and humanity.

45 Days To Read The Gospel Challenge – The Gospel of Mark Chapter Ten: All things are possible with God.
OVERVIEW OF THE GOSPEL OF MARK CHAPTER TEN
In this lesson, we explore the key teachings of Jesus in Mark Chapter 10. From Jesus’ views on marriage and divorce to the importance of humility, serving others, and trusting in God over wealth, this chapter offers valuable lessons on how we are to live. We also look at Jesus’ blessing of children, His response to the rich man seeking eternal life, and His healing of the blind man, Bartimaeus.
Jesus on Marriage and Divorce:
The Pharisees questioned Jesus about divorce, and He answered by saying that what God has joined together, no one should separate. He explained that if a man or woman divorces and marries another, they commit adultery. Jesus emphasized that marriage is a sacred bond, meant to be upheld with faithfulness. While some translations mention adultery as a reason for divorce, the main point is that marriage requires commitment.
Note: Divorce on the basis of irreconcilable differences is not the same as divorce for adultery or fornification even if that was the real reason for the divorce. Matthew 19:9 “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.”
28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourish and cherish it, even as the Lord the church:
30For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Did you know that in the Catholic church divorced people cannot take communion unless their marriage is annulled?
Jesus Blesses the Children:
Many people brought their children to Jesus, but the disciples tried to stop them. Jesus was upset and told them, “”Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein”.
The Rich Man and Eternal Life:
A rich man asked Jesus what he must do to have eternal life. Jesus told him to follow the commandments, but also said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” However, Jesus reassured them that with God, all things are possible. This story reminds us that trust in wealth can keep us from fully trusting in God.
Note: Jesus reinstates the “10 Commandments” in this parable.
Jesus on Leadership and Serving Others:
James and John asked if they could sit beside Jesus in heaven, but He told them that such places are reserved for those whom God has chosen. He explained that greatness is found not in ruling over others, but in serving them. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be great must be the servant of all.” He modeled this by giving His life as a ransom for many, showing that true leadership is found in humility and love.
Note: It is not for believers to disobey the law or authority but to put God and his laws first. (Matthew 22: 36-40KJV) 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets).
It is the government that killed Jesus Christ. Luke 20:22-25 KJV 22Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? 23But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me? 24Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar’s. 25And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s.
Jesus reminds the disciples that they obey God over others. Each disciple later went out to start churches and minister unto its leaders.
Note: The leaders were to hold the disciples in high regard. Ministers are to be able to distinguish between holy and unholy and be able to lead the people to God. Jesus came not to be ministered unto but to minister, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Ezekiel 44:23 “And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.”
Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus:
As Jesus passed through Jericho, a blind man named Bartimaeus called out to Him for healing. Jesus said, “Your faith has made you whole,” and immediately, Bartimaeus received his sight and followed Jesus. This miracle shows the power of faith and God’s ability to heal both physically and spiritually.
Jesus heals a blind Bartimaeus at Jericho. Mark 10:52 “And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. Immediately the blind man received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.”
Through these teachings, we learn the importance of faith, humility, serving others, and trusting in God. Jesus emphasizes that following God’s commandments and loving others are central to living a life that honors Him.

Reflection and Discussion: Something to think about.
When the disciples struggled to cast out a spirit from a boy, Jesus told them, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29).
When you’re facing trials and prayer doesn’t seem to be enough, have you considered fasting? There are different ways to fast—some fast for days, while others fast for certain hours due to medical reasons.
Do you practice fasting, and if so, did it make a difference in your situation? Share your experience in the comments below.

1. You will learn Jesus’ command concerning marriage and divorce.
1And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.
2And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4And they said, Moses, suffered to write a bill of divorcement and to put her away.
5And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
6But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
7For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
8And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
9What, therefore, God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
10And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
11And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
12And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
2. You will learn that Jesus loves children and their importance in God’s plans.
13And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.
14But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
15Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. 1
6And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.
3. You will learn what it will take for a rich person to enter into the Kingdom of God. Mark 10: 17-27, 15 KJV
17And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
18And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
19Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Note: Jesus reinstates the 10 Commandments.
22And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
23And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
24And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?
27And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men, it is impossible, but not with God: for with God, all things are possible.
Mark 10:15 “Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.”
4. You will learn that God rewards those who seek him.
28Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.
29And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,
30But he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
31But many that are first shall be last; and the last first. Note: a person who follows God may have persecutions but in the world to come eternal life.
Note: 2Thessalonians 1:7-9 7And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
5. You will learn that Jesus foretells his crucifixion in more detail and tells the disciples that the place on the right hand of God is preserved.
32And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,
33Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:
34And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.
35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
36And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
37They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
38But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
39And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
40But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
41And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.
42But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
43But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
45For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
6. You will learn that Jesus heals a blind man based on his faith.
46And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.
47And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
48And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
49And Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. 50And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.
51And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.
52And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus in the way.
