Overview of the Gospel of Mark
Mark “Mark John” is also known as “John” in the Book of Acts. He is not John the Baptist. Peter (disciple) was a mentor to Mark. Mark did not walk with Jesus but ministered under Peter. Peter called Mark, his son. Mark’s work was written in Italy around A.D. 50-70 before the Book of Acts. Mark’s work is referred to as the “Memoirs of Peter” because he was very close to the disciple Peter and listen to everything Peter said. The Gospel of Luke borrowed a lot of Mark’s notes.
The Gospel of Mark focuses on the miracles that Jesus performed while spreading his ministry in Galilee. Mark’s Gospel emphasizes Jesus Christ’s human nature, emotions, and limitations. *Note: This side of Jesus demonstrates that there aren’t any human conditions that he is not aware of and therefore his believers can know that he understands our problems and situations.

OVERVIEW OF THE GOSPEL OF MARK CHAPTER NINE
Jesus goes to the mountains with his disciples Peter, James, and John. He revealed his divine nature to them by transfiguring himself. His clothes became shining, exceeding white snow. There appeared unto them Elias (prophesized about the coming of Jesus) with Moses (parted the Red Sea by God’s power ) both great prophets that had passed away They talked with Jesus. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice out of the cloud, saying, “this is my beloved Son: hear him”.
Later, the disciples had a hard time casting out a dumb spirit out of a child. Jesus told the disciples some spirits come out only by fasting and praying. The father of the boy said, “I believe help mine unbelief.” Jesus ordered the spirit out of the boy. And he said unto them. Mark 9:23 “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
Note: The father was a believer and the boy was not as he was possessed as a child. The child could not pray for himself. Therefore, a believer’s intervention can be done for a child and one that is not against God. Prayer and fasting are important in the faith. That is why parents are to cover their children with prayer (standing in the gap until they can come around to the Lord). Believers are to pray for the motherless and fatherless.
Jesus foretells his own death and resurrection to prepare the disciples. Mark 9:31 “For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him, and after that, he is killed, he shall rise the third day.”
Note: Jesus is predestined. This means God knows all things before they happen. There are said to be over 2000 prophecies in the bible that actually came true and some hundreds of years in advance. The fall of Jerusalem was predicted 70 years in advance.
Jesus exhorts his disciples to humility. The disciples talked among themselves that when Jesus is killed, who would take his place and be the greatest? Mark 9:35KJV “And he (Jesus) sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
Note: Moses was well known as a powerful man of God but he was also known for his humbleness. God cannot direct the vain and proud. He rejects the proud. James 4:6 “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
Jesus speaks of God’s love for children. Mark 9:37KJV “Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but for him that sent me.” Mark 9:42 “And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone was hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.”
The disciples told Jesus that people they did not know were casting out devils in his name. The disciples told them to stop because they did not follow them. Jesus warns the disciples not to reject those who are not against them. Jesus takes serious offense to sin and warns that if something makes you stumble, remove it. It is better to have one eye, hand, or foot than to go to hell. Mark 9:50 “Salt is good: but if the salt has lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.”

Reflection and Discussion: Something to think about.
When the disciples had a hard time casting out a dumb spirit in a boy, Jesus told them, Mark 9:29 “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” When you are in the midst of trials and tribulations and prayer is not working have you tried fasting? There are many ways to fast. Some fast for days, some fast for certain hours because of medical reasons. Do you fast? Did it make a difference in your situation? 28And when he came into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. 30And they departed thence and passed through Galilee, and he would not that any man should know it.
