Overview of The Gospel of Luke
Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts. Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time Paul was in jail. His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary. Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order. His primary research is based on eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Luke knew the disciples personally. He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark’s work. A lot of Luke’s work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.
Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation to Mary. He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich people, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

Summary of The Gospel According to Luke Chapter Twenty Three:
This chapter tells of Jesus being led to the cross and crucified. The whole multitude of them arose and led Jesus to Pilate. They began to accuse him, saying, we found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. Jesus is sent to Herod because of his jurisdiction. Herod sent him back to Pilate.
It was custom to release one prison during the Passover. Pilate asked the people who they wanted to release, Barabbas, a murder (thief), or Jesus Christ the King of Jews. The people wanted Barabbas released. They said they had one King, Caesar (Roman). the people were afraid of what Caesar would do if they acknowledged Jesus as King. That is why it is written that the government was on Jesus’ shoulder.
Jesus is sentenced to crucifixion along with two other malefactors, who had committed crimes unto death. The daughters of Jerusalem cried. Jesus warned them they should cry for themselves and for their children. He was foretelling of the destruction of Jerusalem. As Jesus was being nailed to the cross, Jesus raises his voice to God. 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do, all while others parted his raiment and cast lots. Jesus prayed for people who were persecuting and laughing at him. He knew his mission and how important it was to complete.
A thief on a cross next to Jesus spoke, 41″And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou come into thy kingdom.” 43And Jesus said unto him, “Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Jesus saved a man who was dying because of his sins.
Note: While you are alive, it is never too late to give your life to Jesus Christ.
It became the sixth hour and the earth became dark for three hours. 6And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. 47Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
Note: A murder was chosen over Jesus Christ due to fear, politics, traditional religious laws, and ignorance. However, Jesus still forgave a criminal as well as his enemies that wanted his death in a cruel manner.
However, it is clear by Jesus’ comments to the weeping women that the people of Jerusalem will reap what they sow. It is clear as a benefit of Jesus Christ dying, as the last and only needed blood sacrifice, his blood gives the forgiveness of sins until the end of the world. Jesus is crucified on a Friday, buried on a Saturday (Passover), and in the next and last chapter, The Gospel According to Luke: Chapter24. He rises from death on a Sunday. Then the Hebrew Sabbath was Saturday. Later the Sabbath was changed to Sunday by the Catholic Church. Read a previous post on the Sabbath.

C. Jesus forgave sin while on the cross demonstrating it’s not too late to be saved. Jesus asked the Father to forgive the ones who were persecuting him. Demonstrating we are to pray for the ones who persecute us. Luke 23: 33-43 KJV
33And when they have come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment and cast lots. 35And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is Christ, the chosen of God. 36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, 37And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. 38And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
