Overview of The Gospel of Luke:

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research is based on eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark’s work. A lot of Luke’s work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation to Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich people, sinners and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

45 Days to  Read the Gospel Challenge. The Gospel According to Luke Chapter 11-Ask and Thou Shall Receive – How To Pray
Prayer to Jesus Christ

alt tag: #Prayer to Jesus Christ

Summary of The Gospel According to Luke Chapter Eleven: Extensive summary on how to pray to reference other chapters of The Gospels.

As Jesus was praying, a disciple asked him to teach them to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3Give us day by day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Note: There is another variation of this prayer in The Gospel of Matthew. Luke was not a disciple but a physician that recorded his investigations by interviewing the disciples and others.  The Lord’s prayer is often recited from Matthew Chapter Six.

Matthew 6: 5-17     5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray to stand in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8Be, not ye, therefore, like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him.

9After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 14For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

 16Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head and wash thy face;

Note: Jesus did not end the prayer in his name because he was with them and had not been sacrificed for our sins. However, in The Gospel of John, just before being sacrificed, Jesus prayed for the disciples and said he kept them but was leaving. When he rose from death, they will pray in his name.  Jesus Christ’s death (sacrifice) reconnected us to God, the creator, The Word (creator) became flesh in Jesus.   The father and son are one.

John 14: 8-14.  8Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? 10Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. 12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it

Note:  There is a condition to the receive.  Jesus says to love him AND keep his commandments.  However, any believer that believes in his name may pray to the Father in Jesus’ name and expect to receive what he asks in accordance with God’s will.   Learn the scripture to know God’s will.  John 14: 15-20  15If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; 17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Pray for your enemies

Pray for your enemies

18I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19Yet a little while and the world seethe me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. 20At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.  Note:  The Spirit of Truth, The Comforter is also known as the Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, and the Spirit of God as explained in the Gospel of John.

Note: Jesus told them John 16: 22And ye now, therefore, have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. 23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. 25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

26At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you.  John 1: 10-12  10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Note:  Matthew22:36-40  36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Luke 11: 10 10For every one that asked, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  Jesus also told a story that tells believers to be persistent as well in their prayer life.  Note: Pray until your request is fulfilled. A delay is not a denial.

Jesus cast out devils out of a man who could not talk. When the demons were gone, the dumb man spoke. The people were astonished and accused Jesus of casting out devils by an evil spirit, Beelzebub, the chief of the devils.  Jesus spoke in detail but explained that Satan does not divide himself.  Jesus said, He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathered not with me scattered.  He warned that when unclean spirits leave a person, they will seek rest.  If they cannot find a place, they will return with seven other spirits more wicked than the first.  They enter and dwell there.  The state of the person is worse than before.

Ask and receive

alt tag; #Ask and receive

Note:  Many addicts of all kinds report that once they are no longer addicted, if they go back to what they were delivered from, their state is usually worse than in the beginning. It is important to stay close to Jesus Christ.

“Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it.  Many repented at the preaching of Jonas and behold, a greater than Jonas is here as well as greater than Solomon”.  Jesus was referring to himself.  Luke 11:  34-35  KJV 34The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. 35Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

Jesus was angry and said they were a wicked generation. The blood of all the prophets from the foundation would be required of that generation. To the lawyers, he rebuked as well.   Luke 11:47  47Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them

Jesus was asked to dine with the Pharisee as they were always looking for something to accuse him of.  He went in and sat down to eat. The Pharisee’s marveled that he had not first washed before dinner. Jesus rebuked them.  In other words, they were worried about the wrong things. Luke 11:39-40  39And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. 40Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without making that which is within also?  Note:  Love God and Obey him.  Forgive all who ask and those who do not ask.  Love everyone. Release all grudges and hard feelings.  Repent your sins and then forgive yourself. Matthew 6:15  “But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”  Last but not least make your needs known to the Father in Jesus Christ’s name.

Chapter Highlights of Gospel According to Luke – Chapter 11 KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions.
A. Jesus teaches the disciples to pray the Lord’s Prayer  Luke 11: 1-4 KJV  This prayer is according to The Gospel of Luke. A different version is in The Gospel of Matthew. See summary above.

1And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

B. Jesus declares and explains that believers can ask and shall receive: First, love God and obey his commandments and ask within the will of God. Luke 11:9-13 KJV

9And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Matthew22:36-40  36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

C. Why Jesus denounces woes upon the Pharisees  Luke 11: 14-18, 28-30 KJV

Luke 11: 14-18, 28-30 KJV  14And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. 15But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. 16And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. 17But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.  T or F

28But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. 29And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. 30For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
