OVERVIEW OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE:

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time disciple Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research was eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark, as a lot of his work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation of Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ: Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

Summary of The Gospel According to Luke Chapter Nine:

Luke 9: 1-2 Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.  2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.  He told the disciples to take nothing with them on their journey. And whose house they entered, there they stayed until time to depart. If they are not received, go into the street and shake the dust off their feet as a testimony against them.  Herod heard of the miracles of Jesus and was perplexed. Many told him that Jesus was John the Baptist, whose head had been cut off by Herod and some said the prophet, Elias.

The disciples returned. They and Jesus went into a city called Bethsaida. The people followed him.  He received them, taught them, and healed them. At the end of the day, Jesus told the prophets to feed the people.  They were in a desert and there were over five thousand people.  The disciples said they had no more than five loaves and two fishes. Jesus blessed it. They gave the food out and feed everyone. There were 12 baskets of food leftover.

Later, Jesus was alone with his disciples and prayed. He asked the disciples, who do the people say I am?  They answered,  John the Baptist; but some say Elias and others say, that one of the old prophets has risen again. Jesus asked, Who do you say I am? Peter answered “The Christ of God”. Jesus commanded them to tell no man.

Jesus advised them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests, and scribes, and be slain. He will raise up the third day. He said if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come into his own glory.

After eight days, Jesus took Peter and John, and James to a mountain to pray. As they prayed, there was a transformation of glory. Two men, Moses and Elias appeared and spoke of Jesus’ death which he will happen in Jerusalem. They departed and the disciples were amazed. A cloud came over them and a voice came out of the cloud “This is my beloved Son: hear him”.

The next day, many people met them. A man brought his son, a child, that was possessed by an unclean spirit. The man said that he asked the disciples to cast the demon spirit out of his son but they could not.  Jesus answered, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? He delivered the child from the spirit and gave the child to his father.  The people were all amazed at the mighty power of God.

Again, Jesus warned the disciples he would be delivered unto the hands of men.  The disciples wondered who would be great amongst them when Jesus left.  Jesus said whosoever shall receive this child in my name receive me: and whosoever shall receive me received him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.  Messengers were sent to a village of Samaritans, to make ready for Jesus but were refused.

The disciples wanted to cast fire upon them but Jesus said that they did not know the spirit within them.  It was a spirit to save men’s lives not to destroy them.  They went to another village.  A man asked to follow him, Jesus warned that to follow him, his followers leave everything and follow him. They could not say goodbye to families nor bury their families.
