Overview of The Gospel of John:

The Gospel of John is written by one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee. This Gospel is 21 Chapters long.  John is described as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus loved”.  It has been determined by biblical scholars that John wrote The Gospel of John (also known as “According to John”).

It was written around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after he witnesses Jesus’ earthly ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and as an eyewitness in composing the gospel. He is not John the Baptist. However, in this book, John the Baptist is discussed.

The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation. It establishes his deity as Creator of the World, The Father (I AM), and is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh. Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God (I AM), believers are to understand that Jesus is the Son of God that came in the flesh and yet while we were sinners, died for our sins and rose again to become Savior of the World-reconnecting us to God. That is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ’s name.

Defeating death and sin by the shedding of his blood and life, Jesus gives the gift of everlasting life with repentance. That by believing you may have life in his name (20:31)  John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  God is omnipresent meaning he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.

Revelation 19:6  “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thundering, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Overview of Chapter Twelve

Jesus returned to Bethany, six days before the Jewish Passover. He and his disciples had dinner with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus (whom Jesus had raised from the dead). Mary wiped the feet of Jesus with expensive ointment and her hair as an expression of love and gratitude. She believed in Jesus. He brought her brother, Lazarus, back from the dead by calling his name. Jesus claimed in chapter 11, that he is able to do this because he has life in him.  The Father is life.  Jesus often asked before performing a miracle for a person, if  that person believed in him

Many people came to see Lazarus and believed in Jesus. The Pharisees planned to kill Lazarus as well as Jesus because Lazarus’ miracle converted too many people into believers. The next day, Jesus rode into the Jewish Passover feast on a colt, as it had been predicted before he was born by the prophets, signifying that salvation was for everyone, money or no money.

Salvation requires acceptance of Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh as the Son of God – faith is all that’s needed.  John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  See below “Offer of Salvation if you wish to get saved right now.”

In later chapters, we will explore the commandments Jesus gave to the people by which to live.  The crowns as rewards people receive for obedience and bearing fruit.  In addition, we will explore the place repentance play in a believers life and the many benefits of salvation.

Many rulers believed but because they were afraid of being put out the synagogue, they would not admit it.  John 12:43 “They desire the praise of man over the praise of God”.

Note: Often in today’s world, people in churches or Christian organizations are led by some leaders who do not distinguish between holy and unholy.  Strong objections are not made to their leadership by followers because of fear of rejection of peers or being put out of the church.  These followers seek the praise of God and not man.

Later, the rejection of Christ, “The Word will judge him in the last day”.  *The last day can refer to judgement day, last day of the world or the last day of a person’s life.  In addition, Zechariah 1: 3 Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will return unto you, saithe the LORD of hosts.

Reflection and Discussion

Have you taken time to honor people in your life who have been good to you? Those are the type of feelings similar to the gratitude and feelings Mary had for Jesus. Jesus had brought her brother back to life . She saw the power of God.  Have you taken time to honor God because he has been good to you?  Do you tell others about him?  Post all comments below in the comment section or on ePrayer Circle’s new social media Instagram or  Facebook. eprayercircle.com

The Gospel of John- Chapter 12 (KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions.

A.  Jesus is pleased when we show praise and gratitude as demonstrated with the act of Mary washing Jesus’ feet with expensive ointment, preparing him for burial. The Hour Has Come. (KJV)  John 12: 1-8

1Then Jesus six days before the pass over came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

2There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

3Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.

4Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him,

5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

8For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

B. The Hour Has Come (KJV) John 12: 27-32

John 12: 27-32   27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

C. Jesus demonstrated the message that salvation had nothing to do with money but everything to do with the acceptance of him, faith, and character. He often asked, “Do you believe?” before performing a miracle.  John 12: 13-17(KJV)

13Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

14And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

15Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.

16These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

17The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

D. There is no separating Jesus from the Father, and the dangers of rejecting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. John 12: 41-50

41These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

42Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue

43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. 44Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

45And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

46I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world

47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
