Technology and the Mind: Recover Forgetfulness With The Power of Prayer, Reflection, and Deep Thinking. Action Steps

In a world where technology dominates our daily lives, have you ever wondered about the true capacity of your brain? The human brain can store an estimated 2.5 petabytes of information — enough to hold about 3 million hours of television. But what happens when we overwhelm it with constant screen time?

Research shows that excessive use of digital devices, especially social media, can shrink critical areas like the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and deep thinking.

Ever experience brain fog or forgetfulness after long hours online? You’re not alone. Studies published in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions reveal that too much screen time can lead to reduced memory, focus, and even impair social skills. However, there’s hope. Just like the body heals, the brain can too.

Jesus, known for His deep reflection and prayer, showed us the power of pausing and connecting with God to access higher-level thinking. In a world of distractions and overstimulation, the key to restoring our minds to become better thinkers can be found in moments of stillness and prayer.

Jesus is a perfect example of a deep thinker. He often withdrew to pray and meditate on God’s Word. In Luke 5:16 (KJV), it says, “And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.” This allowed Him to receive divine knowledge and guidance from God. Similarly, spending time in prayer, memorizing scripture, and meditating on the Word can help us gain wisdom and focus in our busy lives.

The Bible teaches us in Hosea 4:6 (KJV), “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” When we don’t spend time gaining wisdom from God’s Word or training our brains, we can lose the ability to think clearly. Science supports this idea. The saying “use it or lose it” applies to our brains too. Research shows that not using our brains for critical thinking can lead to cognitive decline over time.

This is why it’s essential to engage in activities like writing in diaries, doing puzzles, reading, and even creating to-do lists. These simple tasks improve brain function and promote clarity.

Technology trends such as endless scrolling on social media, binge-watching shows, and constant texting can cloud our thinking. Including TV, it can overstimulate the brain. Causing many people anxiety and insomnia. Studies from the University of California reveal that multitasking with devices weakens our ability to focus and leads to short-term memory loss.

Jesus’ example reminds us to step away from the noise and be still. In Matthew 14:23 (KJV), we read, “And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray.”

To truly restore our minds, we must focus on deep thinking. Psalms 46:10 (KJV) says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Taking time away from the distractions of technology allows us to reconnect with God and think deeply about our lives. As Jesus showed us, a clear mind is a focused mind.

Reflecting on God’s Word, getting good sleep, and practicing meditation like Jesus did can help us restore the brain functions lost to technology overload. Philippians 4:8 (KJV) advises us to focus on things that are true, honest, and pure: “Whatsoever things are true…think on these things.” This practice builds wisdom, focus, and clarity in our minds.

 

James 1:4-7 KJV  4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. Action Steps to Help Recover the Mind and Become a Deep Thinker

  • Daily Prayer and Meditation
    Spend at least 10 minutes in prayer and meditation each day. This helps calm the mind, reduce stress, and improve focus. Jesus often withdrew to pray, which allowed Him to gain clarity and wisdom. Regular prayer strengthens your spiritual connection and deepens your thinking.
  • Memorize Scripture
    Pick one Bible verse a week to memorize. This not only sharpens memory but also helps train the mind to focus on positive and life-giving truths. As you meditate on scripture, your understanding and wisdom grow, helping you make better decisions.
  • Limit Screen Time
    Set specific times during the day to step away from screens. Reducing screen time helps restore your brain’s natural ability to think deeply. By taking breaks, you allow your mind to relax and refresh, leading to clearer thinking.
  • Write in a Journal
    Writing down thoughts, prayers, or reflections daily helps you process information better and improves problem-solving skills. Journaling organizes your thoughts, allowing you to understand your emotions and experiences more clearly.
  • Do Puzzles and Brain Games
    Engage in activities like crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or brain games. These help sharpen the mind by challenging it to think critically, improving memory and cognitive function.
  • Practice Gratitude
    Write down three things you are grateful for each day. Gratitude shifts your mind to focus on positive aspects of life, which reduces stress and boosts mental health, fostering a clearer mindset.
  • Get Enough Sleep
    Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Rest is essential for brain recovery and memory consolidation, which enhances mental clarity and deep thinking.
  • Read Books
    Dedicate time each day to reading books, especially ones that inspire or teach you something new. Reading stimulates the mind, increases knowledge, and develops the ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Create a To-Do List
    Plan out your day by writing a list of tasks. To-do lists help reduce mental clutter and allow for focused thinking. By organizing your day, you can approach each task with greater concentration and efficiency.
  • Reflect on Your Day
    First thing in the morning, take 5 minutes to reflect on your day. Process your thoughts. Allow the Holy Spirit to bring thoughts to fruition. Let him guide you.  Reflection allows your mind to process the events and prepares you for deeper, more focused thinking.  This will help you make better decisions because you will not run with the first solutions.

Heavenly Father,
I come before You in Jesus’ name, asking for Your guidance and protection over my mind. Please keep my thoughts pure and my mind strong, rooted in Your Word. Order my steps in Your Word, as Psalm 119:133 says, and let no sin or confusion take hold of me. Fill me with wisdom, clarity, and a sound mind. Strengthen my memory, so that I may recall Your goodness and promises always.

I ask for wisdom and knowledge to apply to every area of my life, my challenges, tasks, and especially to my service to You. Help me use the gifts You’ve given me to honor You and make a difference in the lives of others. I trust You, Lord, to guide me in all things and keep me sharp for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
