Letter from the Editor’s Desk: Destinations Are Hijacked – Desires vs. Obedience

Hello ePrayer Circle Tribe,

Drinking my coffee and thinking about a lady I ran into while shopping in a grocery store, In our journey through life, our desires often clash with the path of obedience that God has set before us. It’s easy to let our feelings guide our actions, but when we do, we risk hijacking our own destinies. A conversation with a troubled woman recently illustrated this struggle clearly.  Let’s talk about it.

This woman was deeply disturbed by conflicts within her family. She had harbored bitterness for over 28 years and did not want her husband to have anything to do with his family because of past hurts. Every statement she made was rooted in her feelings: “I felt this way,” “I was hurt.” Her desires were clear, but they conflicted with her husband’s wishes to reconnect with his family.

More importantly, her actions were not aligned with God’s Word, which commands us to forgive and stop hating. Her desire for revenge and control placed her in a dangerous position—one where no believer should find themselves.

She wanted a secure marriage but ended up sabotaging her own relationship by holding onto bitterness against people her husband loved. This caused constant conflict and a breakdown in communication within their marriage.

Proverbs 10:12 (KJV) reminds us, “Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.” Instead of allowing love to cover the past, this woman allowed hatred to stir up strife, dividing her family. God’s Word is clear—He hates division. Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV lists things the Lord detests, and among them is “he that soweth discord among brethren.”

In contrast, Ephesians 4:31-32 (KJV) instructs us, “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

The woman’s failure to forgive her husband’s family only brought more pain and division into her life. By holding onto past hurts, she hijacked her own destination—a peaceful, loving relationship with her husband.

Jesus set the ultimate example of forgiveness on the cross when He said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34 KJV). As Christians, we are called to follow His example.

We must love God first and foremost, and secondly, love each other more than ourselves. Without forgiveness, there can be no true love, and without love, our relationships crumble.

It’s easy to let our desires take control, but doing so leads us away from God’s will. Instead, we should strive for obedience to God’s Word, even when it’s difficult. Loving people who may not love us back is a challenge, but it’s where true Christian growth occurs. Remember, the crowns are not given for loving those who love us—they are given for loving those who don’t.

Are there any areas in your life where holding onto past hurts might be preventing you from experiencing the fullness of God’s love and peace?

Let us not hijack our own destinations by clinging to desires that conflict with God’s commands. Instead, let us walk in obedience, forgive as we have been forgiven, and love as Christ loves us. In doing so, we will find that our relationships flourish and our lives align with the beautiful destiny God has planned for us.

May Our Living Hope In Jesus Christ Find You Faithful,
