ePrayer Room: The Greatest Commandment: Loving God with All Your Heart

Deuteronomy 6:5 KJV  “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”

In the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 6, verses 5 to 9, God gives us a very important commandment. He tells us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and might. This means we should love God with everything we have, with all our strength and all our being. Jesus declared it the first commandment for all to follow.

Deuteronomy 6: 5-9 KJV  5And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

God also tells us to keep His words in our hearts and to teach them to our children. He wants us to talk about His words all the time, whether we are at home, walking outside, going to bed, or waking up. God wants His words to be always on our minds and in our conversations.

To help us remember His words, God tells us to write them down and keep them in places where we can see them every day. We can write them on our hands, on our foreheads, and on the doorposts of our houses. This way, we will always be reminded of God’s commandments and teachings.

God gives us this commandment because He loves us and wants what is best for us. When we love God with all our heart, soul, and might, we are showing Him that we trust Him and believe in His love for us.

A couple decides to start a daily prayer and Bible study routine together. They set aside time each day to  pray together. They also make an effort to incorporate God’s word into their conversations throughout the day, reminding each other of His teachings and commandments. Additionally, they write down verses that resonate with them and place them in visible places around their home, like on the bathroom mirror or refrigerator, to serve as constant reminders of God’s love and their commitment to loving Him with all their heart, soul, and might. They often read passages of Scripture, discuss its meaning, and attend bible study at their local church. These practices not only strengthens their relationship with each other but also deepens their relationship with God, as they make Him the foundation of their marriage and family life.

In the Bible, we read about King David, who loved God with all his heart. God took a kingdom away from a aruler who did not obey him and gave it to David. In 1 Samuel 13:14, God says that David is a man after His own heart. David showed his love for God by constantly seeking Him, praying, and obeying His commandments. David’s life teaches us that loving God with all our heart means seeking Him in everything we do and following His ways. David’s example reminds us of the importance of loving God above all else.

1 Samuel 13:14 KJV  “But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him (David) to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.”

In summary, the commandment in Deuteronomy 6:5–9 is not just about loving God with our words but also with our actions. It is about making God the center of our lives and teaching our children to do the same. Through real-world examples and biblical stories, we can learn how to apply this commandment in our daily lives.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
