Letter From the Editors Desk: Be Aware of Your Surroundings: What Does Woke Mean? Answer
Hello ePrayer Circle’s Tribe,
After my morning devotion, I sat down with a cup of coffee, reflecting on a recent YouTube news clip that asked, “What Does Woke Mean?” I laughed at the memory it stirred up, reminding me of how different generations and cultures use words to convey powerful ideas, sometimes leading to misunderstandings.
A few years back, my daughter and her friends often used the term “lit,” They even bought stickers saying “We Stay Lit”. To me, “lit” meant getting high, In the 80’s that is what it meant. I recalled feeling alarmed, thinking my daughter might be involved deep in alcohol and drugs. How else could I interpret it? I struggled with how to address the issue with her.
When I finally did, offering help, she burst into laughter. “Mama, lit means excellence,” she explained. Skeptical, I decided to look it up in the dictionary on Google and was surprised and relieved to find that she was right.
Meriam-Webster Dictionary stated. ‘Lit’ has been a slang term meaning “intoxicated” for over a century. More recently, it has acquired the meaning “exciting,” as well as a broader meaning along the lines of “excellent.”
In a world filled with distractions and dangers, it is crucial to be vigilant and aware of our surroundings. Being “woke,” a term often used to describe being alert to societal issues, goes beyond that—it’s about being spiritually and mentally awake. This concept is not new; even in ancient times, there were stories that illustrated the importance of being watchful and wise.
In the Meriam-Webster Dictionary on Google, Woke means: Woke is now defined in this dictionary as “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice),”
One such story is found in the Bible, where a man chose his soldiers based on how they drank water from a pond. This essay explores the significance of being watchful and alert, drawing insights from this biblical story and relevant scriptures.
In the book of Judges, Gideon, a man chosen by God to deliver Israel from the Midianites, faced a daunting task. Despite having a small army, God instructed him to choose his soldiers based on how they drank water from the pond. Some dipped their heads in the water, showing no awareness of their surroundings, while others cupped the water in their hands, always alert to potential danger.
By selecting the latter group, Gideon demonstrated the importance of being vigilant and aware. With this small but attentive army, Gideon achieved a miraculous victory over the Midianites, showcasing God’s power and the effectiveness of being watchful.
This story parallels our lives today. We are constantly faced with challenges and adversaries, both seen and unseen. Scripture warns us in Hosea 4:6 KJV that lack of knowledge can lead to destruction. “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
”God desires us to be wise as serpents but harmless as doves, as stated in Matthew 10:16 KJV. This means being alert and watchful, yet maintaining a gentle and peaceful demeanor. “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Nothing comes to a sleeper but a dream
Proverbs 24″33-34 KJV 33Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 34So shall thy poverty come as one that travels; and thy want as an armed man.
In conclusion, being watchful and aware of our surroundings is not just a physical act but also a spiritual and mental discipline. By staying “woke” in this sense, we can navigate life’s challenges with wisdom and discernment, trusting in Jesus’ promise of victory. Let us heed the call to be vigilant watchmen, staying awake to the world around us and to the guidance of our Savior.
2 Timothy 2:15 KJV “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Matthew 22:29 KJV “Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.”
Reflective Question: How can you apply the principle of staying “woke” in your daily life, being both spiritually and mentally alert?
May our Living Hope fill you with Peace and Favor,

A CALL TO SALVATION:
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
