In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it can be easy to miss the gentle voice of God speaking to us. Job 33:14-18 reminds us that God speaks to us in various ways, especially in the stillness of our minds.
The passage begins by highlighting how God speaks, saying, “For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceived it not.” This suggests that God often communicates with us, but we may not always recognize His voice.
The scripture goes on to describe the ways in which God communicates with us, including through dreams and visions. It says, “In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumbering upon the bed; Then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction.” This shows that God can speak to us when we are in a state of rest, opening our ears to His wisdom and guidance.
One example from the Bible of God speaking to someone in a dream is found in the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob. In Genesis 37, Joseph has a dream in which he sees himself and his brothers binding sheaves in the field. His brothers’ sheaves bow down to his sheaf, symbolizing that his brothers will bow down to him. This dream was a foreshadowing of Joseph’s future leadership and the fulfillment of God’s plan for his life.
The passage concludes by highlighting the purpose of God’s communication with us, which is to guide us away from destructive paths and to protect us from harm. It says, “That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.”
