What is the Difference Between True Repentance and I’m Sorry.
In the book of Corinthians. The Disciple or Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the church to warn them of unknowingly entertaining false prophets and called for repentance. He though his letter a little harsh and may drive some members away. When he arrived and was greeted with open arms, Paul was happy because the congregation received his correction with the intention sent-with love.
He stated he was offering love and not condemnation. If they had sorrow over their sins that lead to repentance and then to obedience of God’s commands, then the letter did what it was intended to do and that was to produce Godly sorrow unto true repentance. This type of sorrow is produced by the Holy Spirit.
Paul stated that sorrow of the world produces death. Human sorrow is wounded pride of getting caught in a sin. It leads to guilt, shame, despair, depression, self pity and hopelessness. For example, a person may apologize for stealing on a job because they were caught and they feared losing their job.
They were not sorry because they violated a law or caused a possible expense to the company that paid them a salary to work for them. This type of sorrow brings shame and is not a healthy fear of judgement. The fear of God is wisdom. Proverbs 9:10KJV “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
Therefore, the difference between true repentance and I’m sorry is that true repentance produced by the Holy Spirit produces an eagerness to pursue righteousness and distinguishes between right and wrong, holy and unholy. Worldly I’m sorry produces death because there is usually no remorse or change of mind or ways.
There is no distinguishing of right and wrong but an attitude of “There is no right or wrong but rather, what I do or do not chose to do.” Regret or apology only comes from a fear type of punishment that a person wants to avoid.

In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 12Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you.
