Two Wedding Vows and Ceremony Scripts
Two Marriage Vows and Wedding Ceremony Scripts
Marriage is ordained to be the basis of the family unit. There are usually two types of wedding or marriage ceremony vows. One is the traditional Christian vows originally printed in the Common Book of Prayers. There are traditional vows performed at courthouses – see the Resource section below. The second type is the personal type in which the bride and groom write their own vows. They are both official vows and performed by an Officiant of weddings.
Generally, states recognize two types of marriage officiants: religious and civil. Some states have no requirements at all regarding the officiant, however. All states allow an authorized person of any religious denomination to officiate weddings. (Source: Who Can Officiate My Wedding? Retrieved from the Internet on 11/22/2022 from findlaw.com)
For nonreligious ceremonies justices of the peace, court clerks, active and retired judges may officiate a marriage. Certain states also accept notaries public as officiants.

A brief Invocation of Prayer. The Lord’s Prayer is Acceptable.
The minister states, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today (tonight) to join this man
and this woman in (holy) matrimony.”
Say a prayer: The Lord’s Prayer is acceptable.
Address to the parties as they stand before the minister.
Do you ___man’s name____________take this woman to be your lawful wife and do you promise to be to her a loving and faithful husband?
Do you _____woman’s name__________take this man to be your lawful husband and do you promise to be to him a loving and faithful wife?
You may join your right hands.
By this token you signify that your lives are now one life: and you pledge yourselves to each other and to the world that you will henceforth be one – one in interest, one in honor and reputation, one in affection: sharing each other’s burdens and cares: ministering to each other joy and happiness in prosperity: comfort and courage in adversity; sympathy and help in all the varied conditions of life and thus by your mutual confidence and companionship making the whole of life sweeter, richer, and nobler. Do you thus covenant and engage? (Answer: We do.)
(If married with a ring, that part of the service should come here and the minister having previously received the ring passes it to the groom saying.)
You may seal this covenant with the ring. Place this ring on the left-hand ring finger of your bride and say after me: (If the bride has a ring, the woman will repeat the same vow below when it is her turn to place the ring on the man’s left-hand ring finger.
“With this ring, I thee wed,
“And with it, I pledge
“My honor, my love, and my life
(The minister then adds:)
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. Amen.
By this covenant and these promises thus mutually given and accepted, you enter into the Holy and happy contract of marriage.
Now, therefore in the presence of God and these witnesses, and by virtue of the authority committed unto me by the Governor, I pronounce you Husband and Wife–married according to the laws of God and of this Commonwealth. And what God hath joined let not man put asunder.
And now, Husband and Wife, as you stand on the threshold of the happy life which opens so brightly and invitingly before you, let me send you forth with a holy benediction, which has blessed so many generations of hearts and homes: “The Lord bless you and keep you: The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.: Amen.
Another sample of a marriage ceremony that is performed usually at courthouses.
The officiant states, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today (tonight) to join this man
and this woman in (holy) matrimony.”
Exchange of Vows
Officiant asks the man, “(his name), do you take this woman to be your wife, to live
together in (holy) matrimony, to love her, to honor her, to comfort her, and to keep her
in sickness and in health, forsaking all others, for as long as you both shall live?”
The man answers, “I do.”
Officiant asks the woman, “(her name), do you take this man to be your husband, to live
together in (holy) matrimony, to love him, to honor him, to comfort him, and to keep
him in sickness and in health, forsaking all others, for as long as you both shall live?”
The woman answers, “I do.”
Officiant states, “Repeat after me.”
To the man: “I, (his name), take you (her name ), to be my wife, to have and to
hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in
sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”
To the woman: “I, (her name), take you (his name ), to be my husband, to have
and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in
sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”
Exchange of Rings
Officiant asks the man to place the ring on the woman’s finger and to repeat the following,
“I give you this ring as a token and pledge of our constant faith and abiding love.”
(Repeat the same for the woman).
Pronouncement
Officiant asks the couple to join hands, then declares, “By virtue of the authority vested in
me under the laws of the State of Florida, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
To the man: “You may kiss the bride.”
