The Law

Alt tag: #The Law, #10 commandments

The Ten Commandments are commandments that God himself wrote on tablets given to Moses to give to the people so that they would learn how to live and not sin. John 1:17 17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.   In addition to the ten commandments, Jesus added two new commandments. Jesus gave two new commandments that if followed fulfilled the law.  Jesus Christ gave us Grace (repentance) and Truth so that we could follow the commandments and not be sentenced to die if we failed.

Mark 10:19  17And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother.

Matthew 22:38-40 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Think of it as being similar to the implementation of the laws of the United States, which are based on the interpretation of the Constitution of the United States.

For example, In the Old Testament, the Sabbath carried a death penalty if not observed.   In the New Testament, Jesus did not do away with observing the Sabbath, he made sure no one could be put to death or judged by man for it.  Jesus’ intent is for people to be governed with their observance of love for God and for one another.

Another example, Jesus reinforced the Old Testament law of marriage with the intent that the institution of marriage is for a lifetime. However, in the New Testament, Jesus allowed divorce based on adultery only.  After a divorce based on adultery, both spouses are released from the marriage laws of servicing each other. If a divorce is granted for anything other than adultery, then either spouse commits adultery if he or she partners with someone else.

It is important to note that most people do not get a divorce filed on adultery, they do under irreconcilable differences- a trick of Satan.  God wants us to forgive each other but realized people’s hearts became hardened and treated each other badly.  Therefore, Jesus permitted divorce on grounds of adultery with release from the marriage laws.

John 15: 12- 15   12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Exodus 20: 1-22   The Ten Commandments

1And God spake all these words, saying,

2am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:

10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

 13Thou shalt not kill.

14Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15Thou shalt not steal.

16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.

18And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightning, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed and stood afar off.

19And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

20And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

Call to Salvation:

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
