Repentance: The Path to Forgiveness and Freedom
Repentance with remittance is so important because the enemy and his or her curses are cancelled and there are no legal grounds the attacks can hold on too. Sometimes we curse ourselves with guilt and shame. We limit what God has not limited. We don’t forgive what God will forgive. Please subscribe – Free, and Share. 1 John 1:9 KJV “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
A perfect example of this is the 12 Step program originally started as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). It is based on spiritual prinicples and relies heavily on fellowhip, and repentance with remittance to allow the power of God to help free persons from defect in character.
It is one of the most successful programs in the world to free people from alcohol, obesity, anger, relationship, gambling and sex addictions. The 12-Step model has also influenced many other therapeutic approaches and has been integrated into various treatment models.
Its emphasis on community support, accountability, and spiritual growth continues to make it a cornerstone of addiction recovery programs worldwide.
It was founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson (stockbroker) and Dr. Bob Smith (surgeon) in Akron, Ohio. Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith were confessed alcoholics. Their personal struggles with alcoholism led them to seek a solution for themselves and others suffering from the same addiction.
The program has spread to every country and languages, it invites all regardless of religion affiliation, cultural or nationality. However, it started as a Christian faith based program influence by the Oxford Group originally called “A First Century Christian Fellowship” based on the prinicples of the Christian King James Bible in the US.
Three Steps Related to Repentance
Here are three of the 12 steps that relate to repentance and its importance in freeing individuals from addictions. The completed work on the cross by Jesus Christ makes it possible.
Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Confessing faults and mistakes to foster accountability and humility.
James 5:16: “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
Identifying those hurt by our actions and preparing to make reparations.
Matthew 5:23-24: “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.”
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Being willing to let go of negative behaviors and traits.
Psalm 51:10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
Acts 3:19 KJV “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”
Reflective Question: How can acknowledging and confessing your wrongs to God, yourself, and others bring you closer to experiencing true freedom and healing in your life?
Prayer for Repentance Psalm 51: 1-17 KJV
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
5Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
14Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Forgiver me O’Lord. In Jesus name Amen.,
Conclusion
In conclusion, agreeing with God that we are wrong, confessing our sins, loving each other, reconciling, and being willing to do the right thing with obedience places us in a position to be covered by God’s love, mercy, and grace. Unrepented sin places us outside the will of God. That is why Jesus Christ connected us back to God by covering our sins with His life and the shedding of His blood.
