Partnerships: Love and Relationships. Ecclesiastes 4:12 KJV  “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

When I married, I wanted to know from people, what kept your relationship together for so many years? Their marriages weren’t perfect but they were clearly in love. 40 years later, I can attest that the best advice was:

1.  That man and woman make a vow to stay together no matter what happens and what happens between them, love or no love.  You don’t have to love each other for a successful marriage. However, it is advisable. But some people have arranged marriages, and statistics have proven that combined with culture, they work out because of commitment.

2. Don’t hear everything. It’s not that serious.

3.  Keep everyone out of your business because you and your mate can make up after a fight, but people you confided in are still talking about it years later.

4.  Don’t put anybody or anything before each other except God.  Even if you are having an affair (of course you know better), it should be clear that your spouse is first.

5. Pray and praise God together because there has to be something bigger than yourselves that you two can hang on to when you think all is lost.

6.  Be honest.  There is a time when you have to tell the truth, no matter how much it hurts.  It gets to that. There is no love without truth. It takes a while to get there but that is what prayer will do.  Love comes from truth.  There is no love without truth.  God is truth and God is love.

7. Celebrate each other.  Do things that create strong memories so that 40 years from now, you think of them with love.  I remember a neighbor of mine said she and her husband were out all day and were hungry. They were in front of a music store.  They had to make a decision, whether to get a sandwich or a CD.  That was all the money they had.

They chose a CD with songs they enjoyed when they first met. They went home where they had a bottle of wine and she said they had the best night of their lives.  That’s what I’m talking about.  This couple was in their late 40’s, the second time around.  What does age have to do with it? nothing.

God bonds a man and a woman so uniquely that others do not understand.  That is why when people have sex they are bonded together spiritually and physically.  Divorce is devastating because it separates more than just flesh.

Once a woman told me, her mother advised her, to be careful about mixing up blood.  This is in reference to having children as the flesh actually does become one. It is scientifically proven that the blood of the child comes from the father and not the mother.  Many people describe divorce or separation as death, even if they initiated it.  My best advice is to take your time and chose wisely, get to know the family because that is the blood of your children or stepchildren.

Make sure your spouse or finance knows what a commitment is and can honor that with proof.  Can they keep a job?  Dreamers are ok as long as they can keep a job.  Especially, if two salaries are needed.  I don’t mean count layoffs.  Make God the center of your relationship.

1 Corinthians 7:5 – Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempts you not for your incontinency.

Ephesians 5:25 – Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Titus 1:15 – Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure, but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in your heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
