Making complicated plans usually leads to failure. In addition, no one remembers them after a few weeks or when needed. It is often advised that your plans should be simple to express verbally in less than 3 minutes so others may be able to assist you. It is advisable to keep them simple and short so you may be able to complete them and not feel overwhelmed and give up.
Therefore, the minimalist design principle KISS (Keep It Short Stupid), is a minimalist design principle noted by the U.S. Navy in 1960. It is a very good thought method anyone can adopt in making their goals. The variation of the name “Keep It Short and Simple” is credited to a 1938 issue of the Minneapolis Star.
Jesus Christ had goals. His mission started with one person, himself, and now his doctrine stands in every nation of the world.
1 Acquire a set of faithful followers (disciples) to help him teach the Gospel (doctrine) and develop fruit (other teachers) before his crucifixion.
2. Established the church in (his) Jesus Christ’s name. A house of prayer and worship for all nations. A legacy until judgment.
3. Become a one-time Blood Sacrifice that offers Salvation to all people: reconciliation with God through the forgiveness of sins with repentance and remittance.
John 3:16 KJV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Each of Jesus’ goals is actionable. The idea is to know what path you are following. Everything Jesus did fell in line with his goals. Jesus knew how to stay focused and timing was very important. He accomplished all of his goals. Jesus would often say, “The time has not come” or “The hour has come.”
This author is a professionally trained instructional designer. I know how important it is to set measurable clear goals in everything we want to accomplish. School, career, business, spiritual and personal development, finances, purchases, relationships, family, children, and household. Fortunately, there are formulas tried and tested to help do this.
The most noted theory is S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, assignable, realistic, and time-related). This measurement criterion for goals and objectives is used in project management, employee performance, personal and spiritual development, and any planning and instructional goals. The term S.M.A.R.T was first proposed by George T. Doran in the November 1981 issue of Management Review.
S.M.A.R.T. Goals
Specific – A goal that is clear, focused, and cannot be is misinterpreted. What do you want to achieve? Lose weight, buy a car, study the gospel, or start a travel club?
Measurable – Progress is trackable. Examples, losing 40 lbs in 4 months, gaining 500 travel club members in six months, 45 Days to Study the Gospel, or Buying a car in 60 days.
Assignable or Achievable – A goal that you can accomplish with your skill set, ability, and resources. Do you have a job and how much can you set aside to buy the car? Do you have a diet and exercise plan to lose weight? How will you gain new members for your travel club? How will you study the bible, On your own, course, or study group?
Realistic or Relevant – Is it worth obtaining? Is the goal relevant to your needs? For example, You say you want a car. Do you just want transportation to your job and the bus or train will do fine? Is it legal? Do you have a driver’s license? Is it safe? Will the car pass inspection? Is it affordable? Do you need to buy a used one instead of a new one? A goal of 100 lbs in four months is not a medically sound diet.
Time-related – The SMART goal has to be time sensitive in that it will be completed within your set time frame.
Example of SMART Goals:
1. I will lose 40 lbs in 4 months exercising one hour a day and limiting calorie intake to 1200 calories a day.
2. I will gain 500 travel club members in six months with paid advertisement and a 90-day free membership discount.
3. I will study the Gospel in 45 days by joining eprayer circle’s free online 45-Day to Study the Gospel Challenge.
4. I will buy a new car and car insurance in 60 days using auto dealership-approved credit, a $3,000 down payment from savings, and a pay increase on my job.
