ePrayer Room: How to Recognize Pride vs. Self-Respect According to the Bible
In today’s world, understanding the difference between pride and self-respect is crucial to living a life that aligns with God’s Word. Pride often leads to a downfall, while self-respect is rooted in recognizing our value as children of God. Knowing the difference can help guide our behaviors, dress, and interactions with others.
Pride in the Bible
Pride is often depicted as an obstacle to growth, repentance, and peace with God. Those consumed by pride refuse correction and struggle to forgive others.
Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (KJV).
This type of pride can lead to scapegoating others for personal failures and being unforgiving, causing broken relationships.
Self-Respect in the Bible
Self-respect is recognizing our worth in Christ and setting boundaries that honor God’s design for us. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us, “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost… therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (KJV). This means dressing and behaving appropriately, as our actions reflect our respect for God’s creation—ourselves.
Three Steps to Identify Pride vs. Self-Respect
- Reflect on Growth: Are you willing to accept correction, or do you feel you are always right? Proverbs 12:1 states, “Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hates reproof is brutish” (KJV). Accepting guidance shows self-respect, while refusing it indicates pride.
- Assess Your Boundaries: Do you allow others to treat you in ways that don’t align with your value in Christ? Self-respect includes setting limits. Remember Galatians 5:13—”By love serve one another” (KJV)—but also understand when to say no to disrespect.
- Forgiveness and Humility: Do you hold grudges, or do you forgive? Self-respect involves letting go of bitterness, while pride holds onto past wrongs.
In conclusion, understanding the difference between pride and self-respect is essential for growing in Christ and living a life that honors Him.
