The Gospel consists of the four books in the New Testament that gives the teachings of Jesus Christ, written by John, Luke, Mark, and Matthew.

Overview of the Gospel of Matthew:

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew. He wrote it for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

Chapter 21

Jesus’ public entry into Jerusalem: fulfilling another prophecy.  Jesus sent his disciples to go into town and unloose a donkey and bring it to him.  They did.  He rode the donkey into Jerusalem fulfilling another prophecy that the Messiah would come riding on a donkey.   Matthew 21: 5-7 KJV  5Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 6And the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them, 7And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

Jesus drives the traders out of the temple and declares that the house of the Lord is a house of prayer.  12And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, 13And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Note Some bible translations write “My house is a place of prayer and worship”.

Jesus cursed a fig tree.  In the morning, Jesus was hungry and saw a fig tree that had no fruit. He told the tree it will never bear fruit again.  The tree withered and died. The disciples marveled at the power Jesus displayed.   Matthew 21: 21-22 KJV  , 21Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. 22And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Jesus silences those who question his authority.  The chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority does thou these things?  Jesus asked did they believe the baptism of John the Baptist was of heaven or man? They were afraid to say of heaven because then they would have to confess Jesus was of heaven.  If they said, “from man” the crowd would get mad as they loved and accepted John the Baptist as a great prophet from God.  Because they would not answer Jesus, he would not tell them whose authority he spoke and performed miracles.  Jesus knew they did not believe or did not want to believe.

Note: A lot of people today know that God is real and Jesus is salvation but because of customs or religious beliefs, they won’t accept his gift of salvation and teachings.

The parable of the two sons –  This is the story of two sons, one said he would not do what his father said, but repented and did what he asked. The second, said he would do what his father asked but did not do it?

Note: It is the ones who believe, repent AND do the will of God that will go to heaven.

The parable of the wicked husbandmen. A man with a vineyard rented it out for parts of the fruits.  When the harvest came he sent servants to collect. They beat, stoned, and killed the servants.  The owner sent his son. They killed him for his inheritance.  The owner will miserably destroy those wicked men and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.  Matthew 21: 43-45 KJV 43Therefore say I (Jesus) unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.  45And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spoke of them.

Chapter 22

Many are called and few are chosen in the parable of the marriage of the king’s son and The wedding garment.  A King held a wedding feast for his son.  Everyone invited could not come. He commanded his servants to go out and get people in the streets to fill the wedding hall.  Many came and it was filled.

However, one man came and was not dressed properly. The king threw out the poorly dressed man.  Jesus uses this story to demonstrate as it is in heaven.  Many are called but few are chosen because those who came did not come properly, having not done the will of God.

Jesus commands believers to pay taxes.  The Pharisees go out with their disciples with the Herodians, and ask Jesus should they pay tribute to Cesar or not?  Jesus knows they are trying to trap him.  He said give me a coin. He takes the coin and Cesar’s picture is on it.  He said, render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

Jesus said that people in heaven do not marry. They are like angels in heaven.  Note: Here it is safe to say Jesus did not have a wife on earth.  His disciples, left their families to do the work of God.  Jesus set an example of everything he commanded.  Therefore, Jesus does not have a wife in heaven.  Marriage was made for reproduction on earth and to create a family unit that operates within the intent of the will of God.

The two great commandments that all the law hang on.  Matthew 22: 36 KJV   36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.  40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Christ is called the Son of David because Mary (Jesus’s human mother) came from the line of David and also her husband Joseph came from the lineage of King David.  King David called Jesus Lord because he accepted Jesus as the Son of God as well as his Son.

Call to salvation

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
