The Gospel consists of the four books in the New Testament that gives the teachings of Jesus Christ, written by John, Luke, Mark, and Matthew.

Overview of the Gospel of Matthew:

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew. He wrote it for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

Chapter 11

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER ELEVEN

John the Baptist sent two of his disciples to Jesus. John was in prison and he heard that Jesus was healing and not passing judgment on people. John thought he had misunderstood Jesus’ mission.   John sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus was he the Messiah or was he to wait for another?   Jesus performed miracles in front of John’s disciples.  4Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see: 5The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

Jesus’ testimony concerning John the Baptist:  11Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women, there hath not risen any greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.    Note: People in heaven are greater than those on earth.

You will learn why the Jews rejected Jesus and John the Baptist.    18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. 19The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

You will learn what judgment Jesus put on unrepenting cities:  Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum.   20Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done because they repented not:  Note: Capernaum was Jesus’ headquarters.

You will learn that Jesus rejoices that the gospel is revealed unto babes because they receive the Gospel with innocence.  Note: It is good to fear the Lord, be humble, and not be too wise. Jesus reveals himself and the Father to those who he will and not to whom others think fit.   Matthew 11:27KJV  27All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

You will learn what Jesus’ invitation is to the heavy laden.   28Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.  Note: To follow the Lord is to live a life less stressful.  Jesus gives believers the Holy Spirit as the comforter.  The Holy Spirit enables us with his supernatural spirit to endure and to change from unholy to holy.  It is not difficult. Let Go and Let God.

Chapter 12

Jesus’ response when the Pharisees did not like the disciples plucking ears of corn on the sabbath.  The disciples were not working the fields they were looking for food to eat on the Sabbath. During those days, if you did not observe the sabbath, the penalty was death.  That was before Jesus Christ changed that law.   Matthew 12: 7-8 KJV   I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless,  8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath Day.  (Jesus is greater than the temple).

Jesus healed a withered hand of a man on the Sabbath.  Healing is work so the Pharisees were not pleased.  Jesus declared.   Matthew 12:12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore, it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.”

Note: Jesus did not do away with observing the Sabbath.  Moses came with the Law but Jesus Christ came with Grace and Truth.  Jesus wants us to observe the Sabbath to the best of our ability as a sign he is our God and we are his believers and followers — without a death sentence or being judged by others.

Jesus healed many to fulfill an old prophecy. He charged them not to make Him known because the hour had not come and the Pharisees sought to destroy him.  He was fulfilling a prophecy spoken by Esaias.  Matthew 12:17-21 KJV   17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 18Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles.

19He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.20A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he sends forth judgment unto victory. 21And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

The miracle that proved Jesus was performing miracles by the Spirit of God.  Jesus cast out devils and people accused him of doing evil.  Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spoke and saw.  “But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow do not cast out devils but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils,”  Jesus stated Satan cannot divide himself or his kingdom cannot stand.  The same with a nation, city, or house.  Therefore, he healed with the Spirit of God because he is of God.

The unforgivable sin. Matthew 12: 31-32KJV31Wherefore, I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this world, neither in the world to come.

Note: It is important to know that what we speak can condemn us.  36But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words, thou shalt be condemned.

In addition, Jesus spoke of cities where he performed miracles and gave the people the Word of God. They backslide and did not repent. (Lesson 11).  They shall be judged by men of a city that did repent.  Those unrepenting cities  (committing spiritual adultery) faced the judgment of condemnation.  He explained, if a person is delivered from demons, he must be on guard (repent) because they will come back with seven more demons stronger than himself and they all will make their home there and the man will be worst off than he was before.

Jesus’ response to the scribes and Pharisees that wanted a sign.   Jesus was performing all types of miracles and they still wanted a sign. Therefore, there would be no sign for them except Jesus’ crucifixion compared to Jonas’s three days in the belly of a whale because they had no faith. Matthew 12: 38-40 KJV38Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

39But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jesus’ true disciples are his nearest relatives.  48But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 49And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!  50For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
