Daily Words: Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones, But Your Words Will Hurt Me More: Jesus’ Teachings on the Power of Words

It is clear that Jesus’ teachings on the power of words are still relevant today. We should all be careful with what we say, and we should strive to use our words to love and encourage others.

Below are some everyday situations of examples of how people’s words can hurt each other:

  • At school:
    • A child is called a name by a classmate.
    • A student is teased about their appearance or their成绩.
    • A teacher tells a student that they’re not good enough.
  • At work:
    • A coworker makes a backhanded compliment.
    • A boss criticizes an employee’s work in front of others.
    • A colleague takes credit for someone else’s work.
  • In relationships:
    • A partner makes fun of their significant other’s insecurities.
    • A parent tells their child that they’re disappointed in them.
    • A friend makes a hurtful remark about someone’s appearance or lifestyle.

Even seemingly harmless words can hurt someone, especially if they are said in a hurtful way or if they are repeated over time. For example, telling someone that they’re “stupid” or “ugly” can have a negative impact on their self-esteem. Even if you don’t mean it, calling someone a name or making a joke about their appearance can still be hurtful.

It’s important to be mindful of what we say and how we say it, especially when we’re interacting with others. We should all strive to use our words to build each other up, not tear each other down.

  • Here are some tips for avoiding hurtful words:

No man can tame the tongue as it is evil. Therefore, by the Holy Spirit, we are able to tame the tongue. Pray that the Holy Spirit Help You Speak Holy and Rightous at all times.

James 3:8 KJV  “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”

Matthew 19:26 KJV  “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

  • Think before you speak. Consider the impact your words might have on the other person.
  • Be respectful, even if you disagree with someone.
  • Don’t make assumptions about people based on their appearance or background.
  • Avoid using generalizations or stereotypes.
  • Don’t be afraid to apologize if you say something hurtful.
  • Repent and as time goes on you will have developed a new habit of kindness and gift of life to give others as you lift their spirits.

Luke 16: 13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.  Note: Mammon is another name for the devil or Satan.

If someone says something hurtful to you, it’s important to remember that their words don’t define you. You are worthy of love and respect, regardless of what anyone says.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
