Daily Word: Proverbs 6:1-3 (KJV): Explanation and Application
1My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, 2Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. 3Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
3″My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.”
This passage is a warning about making promises, especially financial ones, that you cannot keep. Being “surety” means agreeing to take responsibility for someone else’s debt or obligations. It’s like co-signing a loan. Solomon advises that if you’ve done this, you should act quickly to get out of the agreement because it could trap you in trouble.
Key Lesson: Be Careful with Promises
The Bible teaches us to be wise about commitments. Don’t promise something, especially money, without thinking about the risks. If you make a mistake, admit it and try to fix the situation humbly.
Real-World Example
Imagine your friend asks you to co-sign a car loan. They promise they’ll make all the payments, so you agree. Later, your friend stops paying, and now you are responsible for the debt. If you had thought carefully before signing, you might have avoided the problem. Now, you need to talk to your friend and find a way to solve the issue, even if it’s uncomfortable.
Bible Example
A similar principle is seen in Philemon 1:18-19 KJV, where Paul offers to repay any debt that Onesimus (a runaway servant) owes. Paul takes on responsibility, but only because he trusts God to guide the situation. Unlike the warning in Proverbs, Paul’s action is based on love and wisdom, not a rash decision.
