In today’s world, immigration is a complex and controversial issue. People often debate over policies, borders, and the role of governments in managing who enters a country. But what does the Bible say about this?
In Matthew 22:21 (KJV), Jesus gave us clear guidance when He said, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” This verse reminds us that governments have authority over certain matters, like policies and the rule of law, but God reigns supreme over all things, including moral decisions, love, and justice. Let’s talk about it.
Psalms 9:9 KJV “The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.”
Government Responsibility
Governments are responsible for establishing and enforcing policies, including immigration laws. As long as these policies are just and ensure the humane treatment of individuals, they are in line with God’s command. A government must protect its people from crime, drug trafficking, and enemies of the state.
Leaders are expected to allocate resources wisely and maintain order, just as a shepherd cares for the flock. The Bible says in Romans 13:1 (KJV), “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” While governments serve their roles, they are ultimately accountable to God.
Treating Immigrants with Love
At the core of God’s commandments are love and justice. In Luke 10:27 (KJV), Jesus gives two overarching commandments: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” This law of love extends to how we treat strangers and immigrants.
God’s love does not discriminate based on nationality, culture, or background. In 1 John 4:7-10 (KJV), we are reminded, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.”
Every person, including immigrants, is created in the image of God. Just as we desire safety, respect, and resources for our families, so do those seeking refuge and a better life.
Jesus Himself was a refugee as a child when His family fled to Egypt to escape King Herod (Matthew 2:13-15 KJV). This shows that God understands the plight of those who move to new lands out of necessity.
Justice and Accountability
While we are called to love one another, it’s also true that governments must protect their people. There is a balance between compassion and accountability. Just as heaven has the Ten Commandments to guide the lives of believers, governments have laws that must protect the welfare of their citizens.
However, unlike governments that may falter, God’s law is perfect. He is the ultimate judge over all nations. We are reminded of this divine authority in Isaiah 33:22 (KJV), “For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.”
In all things, including immigration, the highest moral standards are found in God’s commandments. The two great commandments—loving God and loving our neighbor—ensure that our actions align with God’s will.
Love is the driving force behind just and compassionate policies, whether in government or personal life.
Conclusion
While governments have the responsibility to protect their citizens and manage immigration, these policies should always be grounded in fairness, justice, and the love of God. Leaders should remember that though they rule over earthly matters, God rules over all.
As believers, our role is to love others, even those from different lands, as Christ commands us. God’s love transcends all cultures and borders. As we navigate the complexities of immigration, we must always remember that “what belongs to Caesar belongs to Caesar, but what belongs to God belongs to God.”
Reflection Question:
How can we, as believers, show love and compassion toward immigrants while still respecting the role of governments in maintaining order?
