“A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” – Proverbs 15:4 (ESV)

Words have power. They can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage, heal or hurt. That’s why it’s so important to be mindful of what we say, especially as Christians.

Jesus taught a lot about the importance of watching our words. He said, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37). In other words, our words are a reflection of our hearts. If we speak hurtful or judgmental things, it’s a sign that we need to work on our own hearts.

One of the worst things we can do with our words is to gossip. Gossip is spreading rumors or private information about someone else, usually with malicious intent. It’s harmful because it can damage someone’s reputation, relationships, and emotional well-being.

The Bible has a lot to say about gossip. In Proverbs 11:13, it says, “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” And in Proverbs 16:28, it says, “A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; a gossip separates close friends.”

Jesus also spoke out against gossip. In Matthew 12:36, he said, “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak.” This shows us that God takes our words seriously and that we will be held accountable for them one day.

So why do we gossip? There are a few reasons. Sometimes we do it out of jealousy or envy. Other times we do it because we feel insecure or inadequate. And sometimes we do it simply out of boredom.

But whatever the reason, gossip is always wrong. It’s harmful to the person we’re gossiping about, and it’s harmful to our own souls.

So how can we avoid gossip? Here are a few tips:

  • Be careful about what you listen to. If someone is gossiping to you, don’t encourage them. Instead, try to change the subject.
  • Don’t spread rumors. If you hear something about someone else, don’t repeat it unless you know it’s true. And even if it is true, ask yourself if it’s necessary to share it with others.
  • Be forgiving. If you’ve gossiped in the past, ask God for forgiveness and commit to doing better in the future.

Remember, our words are a reflection of our hearts. Let’s use them to build up others, not tear them down.

Additional thoughts:

  • Gossip is a form of spiritual abuse. When we gossip about someone, we’re essentially attacking their character and reputation. This can have a devastating impact on their emotional and spiritual well-being.
  • Gossip is also a form of idolatry. When we gossip, we’re putting ourselves and our own opinions above the truth. We’re also making ourselves the judge of others, which is something that only God has the right to do.

Conclusion:

Jesus taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves. This means that we should treat them with the same respect and kindness that we would want to be treated with. Gossip is the opposite of love. It’s hurtful, destructive, and ungodly.

If we want to be followers of Jesus, we need to commit to watching our words and avoiding gossip. Instead of tearing others down, let’s use our words to build them up and encourage them.

A CALL TO SALVATION:

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:5-6  5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7
