In today’s world, it’s easy to believe something just because everyone else does. But the truth is, a lie is still a lie, no matter how many people agree with it. God calls us to live in truth, and that truth comes from Him.
The Bible is clear about the importance of truth.
In John 8:32 (KJV), Jesus says, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” When we live by the truth, we find freedom in Christ. Lies, on the other hand, trap us in confusion and sin.
One example of a lie in the Bible is found in the story of the golden calf in Exodus 32 KJV. While Moses was on Mount Sinai, the Israelites convinced Aaron to make a golden calf to worship. Everyone around them agreed that this idol was their new god, but it was a lie. They knew the true God had delivered them from Egypt, yet they chose to follow what the crowd wanted.
When Moses returned, he destroyed the idol and corrected the people, reminding them to worship the one true God.
In Proverbs 12:22 (KJV), it says, “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.” God detests lies, but He loves those who live truthfully. Even if the world tells you something is acceptable, always seek God’s Word for the truth.
Lastly, in Romans 1:25 (KJV), it says, “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator , who is blessed for ever. Amen?.” This reminds us not to exchange God’s truth for lies, no matter what the crowd says.
We are to love each other and not lie to convert other people property to ourselves:
Exodus 20:17 KJV “Thou shalt not covert thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covert thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s.”
One of the 10 Commandments . Exodus 20:16 KJV “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”
Reflective and Journal Question:
Are there any lies you’ve believed because it was popular? How can you seek God’s truth today?
