Overview of The Gospel of Matthew
The Gospel of Matthew was written by the apostle Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. Matthew was a former tax collector, called by Jesus to follow Him. His Gospel is believed to have been written between 50-70 AD, and it is the first book in the New Testament, even though it may not have been the first Gospel written. Matthew’s account emphasizes that Jesus is the promised Messiah and King, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies.
Matthew’s Gospel begins with a genealogy that traces Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham and King David, highlighting Jesus’ royal and Jewish heritage. It then moves into the story of Jesus’ miraculous birth, His baptism by John the Baptist, and the start of His ministry.
Mary and her husband Joseph were both from the lineage of King David. Matthew 1:17 “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.” Matthew tells of a prophetic word that told of Jesus’ birth.
Matthew 1:23 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” It is interesting to note that Joseph wanted to divorce Mary quietly because of her pregnancy. But an angel came to him and verified that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Ghost. Therefore, Joseph stayed married to Mary and did not consummate the marriage until Jesus Christ was born.
Note: Jesus Christ is a name translated in the English versions. It is accepted by God. For this purpose these studies are on the English speaking version. Philippians 2:9 KJV “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name:” There are many names people call Jesus but it is only one name to be saved by. If you mispronounce other names (thinking that is the original name) then you are not calling on the Lord.
It is known that what we pronounce today is not the way it was pronounced then. Develop a personal relationship with the Lord and you will know he answers to the name name Jesus Christ (the blood sacrifice). He is the God of the living. Psalms 100:3 KJV 3 Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
The Gospel of Matthew is known for including many of Jesus’ key teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about love, humility, prayer, and the Kingdom of God. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus performs miracles, heals the sick, and casts out demons, showing His divine authority.
Matthew also places a strong emphasis on Jesus’ role as a teacher and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. He frequently references the Scriptures to show how Jesus’ life and mission align with what was foretold about the Messiah. The Gospel also includes Jesus’ parables, teachings on discipleship, and warnings about the final judgment.
The story of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection is the heart of the Gospel. Matthew ends with the Great Commission, where Jesus commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, spreading the message of salvation.
In summary, the Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the promised Messiah, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the King of all nations, whose life, death, and resurrection bring salvation to the world.
Note From Editor: The name “Jesus Christ” is an English translation, and it is accepted by God. Philippians 2:9 KJV says, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.” People call Jesus by many praise names, but only one name is called upon for salvation by English speaking people and that is Jesus Christ. If you mispronounce other names thinking they are the original, you might not be calling on the Lord.
Language has changed over time, but when you have a personal relationship with Jesus, you will know that the name Jesus Christ, the Savior is accepted by God. The Holy spirit bears witness. Jesus gave His life for us. Psalm 100:3 reminds us, “Know ye that the Lord, He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.”
Keywords: “Jesus Christ, Son of God, birth of Jesus, Virgin Mary, Joseph, King David lineage, Holy Ghost, Emmanuel meaning, God with us, prophecy of Jesus, angel of the Lord, Philippians 2:9, name of Jesus, blood sacrifice, personal relationship with God, God of the living, Psalm 100:3, Bible prophecy, Matthew 1, Jesus the Savior, King James Bible.”
45 Days To Read The Gospel Challenge – The Gospel of Matthew Chapter Four: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God
OVERVIEW OF THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER FOUR
In this Lesson, we will explore Matthew Chapter 4, which covers the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, His responses to Satan using Scripture, and the beginning of His public ministry. Students will learn about the significance of Jesus’ resistance to temptation, the calling of His first disciples, and His early miracles, including healing the sick and casting out demons.
This chapter emphasizes the power of God’s Word, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the importance of repentance as Jesus proclaims, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
After being baptized, Jesus went into the wilderness, where He fasted and prayed for 40 days and nights. At the end of this time, He was hungry. Satan approached Him and tempted Him three times: first, by asking Jesus to prove He was the Son of God by turning stones into bread; second, by urging Him to jump off a cliff to see if angels would save Him; and lastly, by offering Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if He would bow down to worship him. Each time, Jesus resisted by quoting Scripture, relying on the Word of God rather than performing miracles. Eventually, Satan left Him.
Luke 4:8 KJV “And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
James 4:7 KJV “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Note: It’s important to remember that Satan knows Scripture and even quoted it to Jesus during the temptations. This shows how false prophets can misuse God’s Word. Learning the Bible for yourself is crucial so that when you face temptation, you can respond with God’s truth and find victory in Jesus Christ. As Matthew 4:4 says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”
In one of the temptations, Satan offered Jesus the world, though Satan had no true authority over it. Before Jesus was born in the flesh, His deity had already been acknowledged by John the Baptist. Jesus is the Word that became flesh, the Creator of all things. As John 1:3-5 KJV says, “All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” Jesus, born of a woman, is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human.
Colossians 2:9-10 KJV reminds us that in Jesus “dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” This means that Jesus embodies the fullness of God, and He holds all authority, even over principalities and powers. Satan, on the other hand, often takes credit for things that are not his, offering what he does not own. Isaiah 54:5 KJV tells us that God is the Creator and Redeemer of the whole earth.
Jesus Begins His Ministry and Fulfills Prophecy
After hearing that John the Baptist was imprisoned, Jesus left Galilee and traveled to Capernaum, fulfilling a prophecy from Isaiah. Matthew 4:15-16 KJV says, “The land of Zabulon and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The people which sat in darkness saw a great light.” This prophecy foretold that the Messiah, the Light, would come to these regions. From that time on, Jesus began preaching, saying, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).
Note: When your time on earth ends, that is essentially the end of the world for you. Be ready by repenting and following Jesus, so you don’t have to scramble to prepare. Many cities and nations have fallen without survivors. It may not be the end of the world, but for those who leave this life, it’s their end.
Jesus Calls His First Disciples and Heals the Sick
Jesus called His first disciples while walking by the Sea of Galilee. He invited Peter, Andrew, James, and John—who were all fishermen—to follow Him, saying, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
As Jesus traveled through Galilee, He taught in synagogues, preached the good news of the kingdom, and healed people of all kinds of sicknesses and diseases. His fame spread throughout Syria, and people brought to Him those suffering from various ailments, including demon possession, mental illness, and paralysis. Jesus healed them all (Matthew 4:23-24).

1. Jesus handles temptation from Satan. Matthew 4: 1-11KJV
1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry.
3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and sat him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6And said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands, they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8Again, the devil takes him up into an exceeding high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9And said unto him, All these things will I give thee if thou will fall down and worship me.
10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11Then the devil left him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
2. Jesus fulfilled a prophecy when he arrived and preached in Capernaum. Matthew 4: 12-17 KJV
12Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
15The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16The people which sat in darkness saw a great light, and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Note: When you leave this earth, that is the end of the world for YOU. Be ready so you don’t have to get ready. Many cities and nations fell with no survivors, it was not the end of the world but it was for the ones that left here, whether it is one person or 50,000 at one time.
3. The promise Jesus made when he called Peter and Andrew, James and John into discipleship. Matthew 4: 18-22 KJV
18And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20And they straightway left their nets and followed him.
21And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22And they immediately left the ship and their father and followed him.
4 The many different types of miraculous healings Jesus performed. Matthew 4: 23-25 KJV
23And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
