Overview of The Gospel of Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew was written by the apostle Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. Matthew was a former tax collector, called by Jesus to follow Him. His Gospel is believed to have been written between 50-70 AD, and it is the first book in the New Testament, even though it may not have been the first Gospel written. Matthew’s account emphasizes that Jesus is the promised Messiah and King, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies.

Matthew’s Gospel begins with a genealogy that traces Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham and King David, highlighting Jesus’ royal and Jewish heritage. It then moves into the story of Jesus’ miraculous birth, His baptism by John the Baptist, and the start of His ministry.

Mary and her husband Joseph were both from the lineage of King David.  Matthew 1:17  “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.”  Matthew tells of a prophetic word that told of Jesus’ birth.

Matthew 1:23  “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”  It is interesting to note that Joseph wanted to divorce Mary quietly because of her pregnancy.  But an angel came to him and verified that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Ghost.  Therefore, Joseph stayed married to Mary and did not consummate the marriage until Jesus Christ was born.

Note: Jesus Christ is a name translated in the English versions. It is accepted by God. For this purpose these studies are on the English speaking version.   Philippians 2:9 KJV  “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name:”  There are many names people call Jesus but it is only one name to be saved by. If you mispronounce other names (thinking that is the original name) then you are not calling on the Lord.

It is known that what we pronounce today is not the way it was pronounced then.  Develop a personal relationship with the Lord and you will know he answers to the name name  Jesus Christ (the blood sacrifice).  He is the God of the living.  Psalms 100:3 KJV Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

The Gospel of Matthew is known for including many of Jesus’ key teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about love, humility, prayer, and the Kingdom of God. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus performs miracles, heals the sick, and casts out demons, showing His divine authority.

Matthew also places a strong emphasis on Jesus’ role as a teacher and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. He frequently references the Scriptures to show how Jesus’ life and mission align with what was foretold about the Messiah. The Gospel also includes Jesus’ parables, teachings on discipleship, and warnings about the final judgment.

The story of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection is the heart of the Gospel. Matthew ends with the Great Commission, where Jesus commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, spreading the message of salvation.

In summary, the Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the promised Messiah, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the King of all nations, whose life, death, and resurrection bring salvation to the world.

Note From Editor: The name “Jesus Christ” is an English translation, and it is accepted by God. Philippians 2:9 KJV  says, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.” People call Jesus by many praise names, but only one name is called upon for salvation by English speaking people and that is Jesus Christ. If you mispronounce other names thinking they are the original, you might not be calling on the Lord.

Language has changed over time, but when you have a personal relationship with Jesus, you will know that the name  Jesus Christ, the Savior is accepted by God.  The Holy spirit bears witness. Jesus gave His life for us.  Psalm 100:3 reminds us, “Know ye that the Lord, He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.”

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

In this lesson on Matthew  Chapter 22, students will explore key teachings from Jesus that reveal deep truths about God’s kingdom and how we should live.

The chapter begins with the Parable of the Marriage Feast, where Jesus teaches that many are called to God’s kingdom, but only those who are prepared and live according to His will are chosen. We also learn about the importance of paying taxes and respecting earthly authority, as Jesus instructs to “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”

Jesus also addresses the nature of heaven, explaining that marriage is for earthly life and that in heaven, people will be like angels. The lesson continues with Jesus sharing the two greatest commandments: to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself. These two commandments are the foundation of all God’s laws.

Finally, students will learn why Jesus is called the Son of David and how King David recognized Him as both a descendant and the Son of God.

By the end of this lesson, students will understand the importance of being prepared for God’s kingdom, fulfilling their responsibilities on earth, and living a life rooted in love for God and others.

Many are called and few are chosen in the parable of the marriage of the king’s son and The wedding garment.  A King held a wedding feast for his son.  Everyone invited could not come. He commanded his servants to go out and get people in the streets to fill the wedding hall.  Many came and it was filled.

However, one man came and was not dressed properly. The king threw out the poorly dressed man.  Jesus uses this story to demonstrate as it is in heaven.  Many are called but few are chosen because who came did not come properly, having not done the will of God.

Jesus commands believers to pay taxes.  The Pharisees go out with their disciples with the Herodians, and ask Jesus should they pay tribute to Cesar or not?  Jesus knows they are trying to trap him.  He said give me a coin. He takes the coin and Cesar’s picture is on it.  He said, render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

Jesus said that people in heaven do not marry. They are like angels in heaven.  Note: Here it is safe to say Jesus did not have a wife on earth.  His disciples, left their families to do the work of God.  Jesus set an example of everything he commanded.  Therefore, Jesus does not have a wife in heaven.  Marriage was made for reproduction on earth and to create a family unit that operates within the intent of the will of God.

The two great commandments that all the law hang on.  Matthew 22: 36 KJV   36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.  40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Christ is called the Son of David because Mary (Jesus’s human mother) came from the line of David and also her husband Joseph came from the lineage of King David.  King David called Jesus Lord because he accepted Jesus as the Son of God as well as his Son.

Highlights  Objectives for  Chapter 22 -The Gospel of Matthew.  What you will learn:

1.  The parable of the marriage of the king’s son and the wedding garment.

1And Jesus answered and spoke unto them again by parables, and said,

2The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

3And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

4Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

5But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

6And the remnant took his servants and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

7But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

8Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.

9Go ye therefore into the highways and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.

10So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

11And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

12And he saith unto him, Friend, how came thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

13Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

14For many are called, but few are chosen.

2.  The question of the Pharisees about paying tribute to Caesar,

15Then went the Pharisees and took counsel on how they might entangle him in his talk.

16And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teaches  the way of God in truth, neither cares thou for any man: for thou regards not the person of men.

17Tell us therefore, What thinks thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

18But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

19Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

20And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

21They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

22When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left him, and went their way.

3.  The Sadducees concerning the resurrection.

23The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

24Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

25Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:

26Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

27And last of all the woman died also.

28Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

29Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

30For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

31But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

32I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

33And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

4.  The two great commandments.

34But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

35Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38This is the first and great commandment.

39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

5.  Christ the son of David.

41While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

42Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

43He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

44The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?

45If David then calls him Lord, how is he his son?

46And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
