Overview of the Gospel of Matthew

Matthew’s name means “Gift of the Lord”, a tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus Christ as an apostle (disciple).  His former name was Levi, the tax collector.  Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew. He wrote it for people who converted from Judaism. This Gospel demonstrates that Jesus Christ is the King and Messiah of Israel.  His works support that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all of the old testament prophecies of the coming of the Messiah.

“This book describes Jesus’s genealogy, his miraculous birth and childhood, his baptism and temptation, his ministry of healing and preaching, and finally his crucifixion and resurrection. The resurrected Jesus commissions his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations.”  Source: Retrieved from the internet on 11/16/2021 from The New World Encyclopedia.  https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Gospel_of_Matthew

OVERVIEW OF  THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

You will learn the sign from heaven that Jesus gave to the disciples to increase their faith. He did not give a sign from heaven to the Pharisees and  Sadducees because he knew their hearts. They had no faith in him.  The disciples were his followers so he revealed mysteries of heaven to them just as he does today according to scripture.   3And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him (Jesus).  Matthew 17: 5 KJV  5While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Note: Two well-respected prophets who had transcended death as there is no death in God were talking with Jesus and the voice of God claimed Jesus and told the disciples to hear (obey) him.

Jesus healed a lunatic when the disciples could not.  A young man could not be healed by the disciples. Jesus rebuked and healed him and he told the disciples it took faith, prayer, and fasting for this type of healing.

Matthew 17: 19-22 KJV Then the disciples came to Jesus,  and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

20And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Jesus foretells his own death and resurrection:  21Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. 22And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 23And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

Tribute or temple tax money was miraculously provided.  Jesus was approached to pay tribute, a temple tax charged annually equivalent to about two days’ wages to males to upkeep the temple.  Jesus explained that the Kings of the earth get tribute (tax or temple) money from a stranger rather than their own children. So their children are free from paying.  Jesus is the Son of God and did not have to pay the tax but he did.

Jesus demonstrates paying the temple tax as not to offend.  He told a disciple to go to the lake and get a fish, open its mouth and find the money, another miracle.  Jesus paid for himself and Peter the tribute or temple tax with the money found in the fish as not to offend the people of the place they were visiting.

Reflection question:

In this chapter,  the disciples could not heal a lunatic and vexed young man.  His father did not know what to do. He asked Jesus to heal the boy and he did.  He told the disciples their faith was not as strong as it could be but some devils cannot be cast out except by prayer and fasting. There are many types of prayer fasting.  People fast for a few hours -sunup to sunset, some fast 24 hours, and some fast before they go to bed until they arise. Praying in the spirit and fasting will build you up so that your request is stronger.

There are many ways to fast, some people have health conditions or take certain medications that require them to eat. Therefore, the traditional way to fast is not wise for them.  How do you fast and how often do you fast?

Objectives for  Chapter 17 -The Gospel of Matthew.  What you will learn:

You will learn the sign from heaven for the disciples.  Matthew 17:1-13 KJV

1And after six days Jesus takes Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart, 2And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. 4Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

5While he yet spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. 6And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face and were sore afraid. 7And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

8And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. 9And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man is risen again from the dead. 10And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. 12But I say unto you, That Elias comes already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. 13Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist.

You will learn how Jesus healed a lunatic.  Matthew 17:14-21 KJV

14And when they came to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falls into the fire and oft into the water. 16And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.

18And Jesus rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him: and the child was cured that very hour. 19Then the disciples came to Jesus,  and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

20And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21Howbeit this kind goes not out but by prayer and fasting.

You will learn that Jesus foretells his own death and resurrection.  Matthew 17: 21-23 KJV

21Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. 22And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 23And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

You will learn why the tribute money was miraculously provided.  Matthew 17: 24-27 KJV

24And when they came to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? 25He saith, Yes. And when he came into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinks thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

26Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. 27Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Note: Tribute tax money is temple tax, equivalent to two days’ wages. It was charged to males annually, in order to upkeep the temple. Kings did not charge their own children temple tax so they were free from it.  However, Jesus being the Son of God was exempt, but he paid the tax for himself and Peter as to not offend, demonstrating what believers are to do.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
