Overview of The Gospel of Matthew
The Gospel of Matthew was written by the apostle Matthew, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. Matthew was a former tax collector, called by Jesus to follow Him. His Gospel is believed to have been written between 50-70 AD, and it is the first book in the New Testament, even though it may not have been the first Gospel written. Matthew’s account emphasizes that Jesus is the promised Messiah and King, fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies.
Matthew’s Gospel begins with a genealogy that traces Jesus’ lineage back to Abraham and King David, highlighting Jesus’ royal and Jewish heritage. It then moves into the story of Jesus’ miraculous birth, His baptism by John the Baptist, and the start of His ministry.
Mary and her husband Joseph were both from the lineage of King David. Matthew 1:17 “So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.” Matthew tells of a prophetic word that told of Jesus’ birth.
Matthew 1:23 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” It is interesting to note that Joseph wanted to divorce Mary quietly because of her pregnancy. But an angel came to him and verified that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Ghost. Therefore, Joseph stayed married to Mary and did not consummate the marriage until Jesus Christ was born.
Note: Jesus Christ is a name translated in the English versions. It is accepted by God. For this purpose these studies are on the English speaking version. Philippians 2:9 KJV “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name:” There are many names people call Jesus but it is only one name to be saved by. If you mispronounce other names (thinking that is the original name) then you are not calling on the Lord.
It is known that what we pronounce today is not the way it was pronounced then. Develop a personal relationship with the Lord and you will know he answers to the name name Jesus Christ (the blood sacrifice). He is the God of the living. Psalms 100:3 KJV 3 Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
The Gospel of Matthew is known for including many of Jesus’ key teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about love, humility, prayer, and the Kingdom of God. Throughout the Gospel, Jesus performs miracles, heals the sick, and casts out demons, showing His divine authority.
Matthew also places a strong emphasis on Jesus’ role as a teacher and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. He frequently references the Scriptures to show how Jesus’ life and mission align with what was foretold about the Messiah. The Gospel also includes Jesus’ parables, teachings on discipleship, and warnings about the final judgment.
The story of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection is the heart of the Gospel. Matthew ends with the Great Commission, where Jesus commands His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, spreading the message of salvation.
In summary, the Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the promised Messiah, the fulfillment of God’s promises, and the King of all nations, whose life, death, and resurrection bring salvation to the world.
Note From Editor: The name “Jesus Christ” is an English translation, and it is accepted by God. Philippians 2:9 KJV says, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.” People call Jesus by many praise names, but only one name is called upon for salvation by English speaking people and that is Jesus Christ. If you mispronounce other names thinking they are the original, you might not be calling on the Lord.
Language has changed over time, but when you have a personal relationship with Jesus, you will know that the name Jesus Christ, the Savior is accepted by God. The Holy spirit bears witness. Jesus gave His life for us. Psalm 100:3 reminds us, “Know ye that the Lord, He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.”
45 DAYS TO READ THE GOSPEL CHALLENGE – THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER 12KJV: 45 Days To Read The Gospel Challenge. Gospel of Matthew Chapter 12: The Unforgiveable Sin. To Speak Against the Holy Spirit.
OVERVIEW OF THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW CHAPTER 12 KJV
In this lesson on Matthew Chapter 12, students will explore key moments in Jesus’ ministry where He teaches profound lessons about the Sabbath, faith, and the nature of true discipleship. The chapter covers several important events, including Jesus’ response to the Pharisees when they criticized His disciples for plucking corn on the Sabbath, His healing of a man with a withered hand, and the accusations from religious leaders that Jesus performed miracles by the power of evil spirits.
Through this study, students will gain an understanding of Jesus’ authority over religious laws, His teachings on the unforgivable sin, and the significance of the Holy Spirit in His works. Additionally, they will discover Jesus’ powerful declaration that true disciples are His closest family members—those who do the will of His Father in heaven.
By the end of this class, students will have a deeper understanding of how Jesus challenged religious norms, emphasized compassion over legalism, and defined what it means to truly follow Him. This lesson invites learners to reflect on their faith, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the meaning of being part of God’s family.
Jesus’ response when the Pharisees did not like the disciples plucking ears of corn on the sabbath. The disciples were not working the fields they were looking for food to eat on the Sabbath. During those days, if you did not observe the sabbath, the penalty was death.
That was before Jesus Christ changed that law. Matthew 12: 7-8 KJV I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless, 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath Day. (Jesus is greater than the temple).
Jesus healed a withered hand of a man on the Sabbath. Healing is work so the Pharisees were not pleased. Jesus declared. Matthew 12:12 “How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore, it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.”
Note: Jesus did not do away with observing the Sabbath. Moses came with the Law but Jesus Christ came with Grace and Truth. Jesus wants us to observe the Sabbath to the best of our ability as a sign he is our God and we are his believers and followers — without a death sentence or being judged by others.
Jesus healed many to fulfill an old prophecy. He charged them not to make Him known because the hour had not come and the Pharisees sought to destroy him. He was fulfilling a prophecy spoken by Esaias. Matthew 12:17-21 KJV 17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 18Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles.
19He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.20A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he sends forth judgment unto victory. 21And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
The miracle that proved Jesus was performing miracles by the Spirit of God. Jesus cast out devils and people accused him of doing evil. Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spoke and saw.
“But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow do not cast out devils but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils,” Jesus stated Satan cannot divide himself or his kingdom cannot stand. The same with a nation, city, or house. Therefore, he healed with the Spirit of God because he is of God.
The unforgivable sin. Matthew 12: 31-32KJV31Wherefore, I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this world, neither in the world to come.
Note: It is important to know that what we speak can condemn us. 36But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words, thou shalt be condemned.
In addition, Jesus spoke of cities where he performed miracles and gave the people the Word of God. They backslide and did not repent. (Lesson 11). They shall be judged by men of a city that did repent. Those unrepenting cities (committing spiritual adultery) faced the judgment of condemnation.
He explained, if a person is delivered from demons, he must be on guard (repent) because they will come back with seven more demons stronger than himself and they all will make their home there and the man will be worst off than he was before.
Jesus’ response to the scribes and Pharisees that wanted a sign. Jesus was performing all types of miracles and they still wanted a sign. Therefore, there would be no sign for them except Jesus’ crucifixion compared to Jonas’s three days in the belly of a whale because they had no faith. Matthew 12: 38-40 KJV38Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
39But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Jesus’ true disciples are his nearest relatives. 48But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 49And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION: SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.
Jesus values our relationship with Him based on faith, not on flesh and blood. Through faith, we are all one family in Christ, regardless of nationality, gender, bloodline, or economic status. As it says in Galatians 3:28 KJV, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” In Matthew 12:48-50 KJV, Jesus emphasizes this truth when He asks, “Who is my mother? And who are my brethren?” He then points to His disciples and says, “For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
Can you think of at least one person, not related to you by blood, who has become like family through true friendship? If not, consider making it a goal to build such friendships. A friend is a precious gift, and to have a friend, you must also be a friend.

1. You will learn Jesus’ response when the Pharisees did not like the disciples plucking ears of corn on the sabbath. Matthew 12: 1-8 KJV
1At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn, and his disciples were hungered and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat.
2But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
3But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did when he was an hungered, and they that were with him;
4How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
5Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath and are blameless?
6But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
7But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
8“For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.”
2. You will learn the declaration Jesus made of the Sabbath when he healed a withered hand and restored it whole on the Sabbath. Matthew 12: 9-14 KJV
9And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:
10And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
11And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
12How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
13Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
14Then the Pharisees went out and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
3. You will learn why Jesus healed many and charged them not to make Him known. Matthew 12: 14-21 KJV
14Then the Pharisees went out and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
15But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;
16And charged them that they should not make him known:
17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
18Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles.
19He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
20A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he sends forth judgment unto victory.
21And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
4. You will learn the miracle that proved Jesus was performing miracles by the Spirit of God and the Kingdom of God had come upon them. Matthew 12: 21-30 KJV
21And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
22Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
23And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
25And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
26And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
27And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
28But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come unto you.
29Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first binds the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
30He that is not with me is against me, and he that gather not with me scatter abroad.
5. You will learn the unforgivable sin. Matthew 12: 31-32 KJV
31Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this world, neither in the world to come.
33Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.
34O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words, thou shalt be condemned.
6. The scribes and Pharisees seek a sign. Matthew 12: 38-44 KJV
38Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
39But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
40For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
42“The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.”
43When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and find none.
44Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he comes, he find it empty, swept, and garnished.
45Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so, shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
7. Jesus’ true disciples are his nearest relatives. Matthew 12: 46-50 KJV
46While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.
47Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
