Overview of The Gospel of Luke:

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time disciple Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research was eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark, as a lot of his work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation of Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ: Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

45 Days Challenge to Read the Gospel-Gospel According to Luke Chapter 2 – The Birth of Jesus Christ

Overview of Chapter Two:

Mary and Joseph lived in Galilee, in the city of Nazareth.  Both pregnant Mary and her husband, Joseph, were descendants of David. The two went to Judea, into the city of Jerusalem to register and be taxed. Because of the rough long trip, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, about six miles from Jerusalem. This chapter foretells the famous birth of Jesus born in a manger and wrapped in swaddling cloths.

There were witnesses, one Simeon who was told he would not die until the prophecy of Jesus Christ’s birth had manifested.  Anna a prophetess and a widow who lived at the temple.  She served God by praying day and night with fasting for many years.  She told everyone who sought redemption in Jerusalem about the birth of Jesus. Then there were shepherds in the field to whom an angel appeared and told them, ” Do not be afraid.  I bring you good tidings of great joy”.

There is a law of the Lord, put in force by Moses,  that every male born shall be holy unto the Lord.  Eight days after Jesus’ birth, he was circumcised and named Jesus. Mary was unclean because of her birth to her son. Her purification was 40 days and she had to offer two doves or two pigeons.  After her purification, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem to be presented and dedicated to the Lord.

Years later, Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem for the Passover feast as was the custom once a year. They took Jesus who was 12 years old.   On the way back, They discovered that Jesus was not with them. They returned to Jerusalem and after three days found Jesus in the temple speaking with the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. These doctors were astonished at Jesus’ understanding and answers.   When Mary asked him, Why did you do this to us?  Jesus replied as if he was astonished, “Did you not know, I must be about my Father’s business?”

Note: This passage signifies that Jesus knew who he was and what he was supposed to do at 12 years of age. (Many scholars say the age of accountability with God is 12, not 18). Please teach your children “Jesus Christ is Lord and the Lord is God”  It is written in Psalm 100 KJV. See the offer of “Salvation below”  In addition, in the US  Christmas, a December month holiday, celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.  Easter, an April month holiday, celebrates his death and resurrection.

Chapter Highlights of Gospel According to Luke – Chapter Two  (KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions.

 A.  The story surrounding Jesus Christ’s birth. Luke 2: 1-17

1And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. 12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. 15And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

B.  Birth rituals – Christ is circumcised and named Jesus: The Law of God enforced by Moses of dedication all males to the Lord.

21And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

 22And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

 23(As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

 C.  The witnesses with a word from God: Simeon, Anna, and three shepherds.

25And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

 27And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

 D.  The age of accountability, Jesus was 12 when he expressed he knew who he was and his mission.

48And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

50And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Romans 10:9-10  9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
