OVERVIEW OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE:

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time disciple Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research was eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark, as a lot of his work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation of Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ: Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

Summary of Gospel of Luke Chapter Seven

Jesus enters into Capernaum. A Centurion’s servant is sick and ready to die but the Centurion wants him to live. He sends Jewish elders to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. The elders went to Jesus and spoke of the Centurion highly. They said he loves the nation and built a synagogue. He is a man of authority and many people are under him.  Jesus is on the way, but more friends of the Centurion met Jesus and said that the man did not think he was worthy of Jesus’s presence nor was his servant.

They ask Jesus to not enter the house but to heal the servant from where he stood, and their request is granted because of the Centurion’s faith.  Jesus did not need to be in the servant’s presence to heal him. Time and distance are not barriers to his powers, as he further demonstrates when he  brings back to life a widower’s only son. Note:  The son is dead. He is not sick.  Jesus did not prevent him from dying. However, he could have.  Time is not a barrier to his powers as he works outside of time.

Luke 7:16 KJV 16And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. 17And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.  John the Baptist sent two disciples as messengers’ to ask Jesus, ” Is he the awaited Messiah or should they wait for another?”

In that same hour, Jesus cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits, and unto many that were blind he gave sight.  Jesus answering said unto the messengers, “Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers’ are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.  And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me”.

Jesus states that John the Baptist is the greatest prophet born amongst women but the least in heaven is greater than John.  All the people justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.  The Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.  Jesus said some men of that generation are like children.

Note: Luke writes that Jesus states that there is no greater prophet born of a woman than John the Baptist which verifies that Jesus did not consider himself a prophet but higher, the Son of God in the flesh, Son of Man, and God as he is identified in this chapter. Luke 7: 29-30 29And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.  30The Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

Jesus was invited to dinner by a Pharisee. A woman came to him as he sat to eat. She cried tears that washed his feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair and anointed his feet with the expensive ointment. The Pharisee saw it and thought, if Jesus was a prophet, he would have known the woman was a sinner. Jesus spoke in a parable meaning, to whom much is forgiven is that one that will love him the most.

Jesus reminded the Pharisee that he received no kiss upon entering into his house, and he put no oil upon his head. Jesus spoke to the woman, “Thy sins are forgiven. Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace.”  The Pharisees wanted to know who is this that has the power to forgive sins?

Note: This story demonstrates that Jesus expects and accepts praise from those who love him.

1Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 2And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. 3And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. 4And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: 5For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

6Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: 7Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.  9When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 10And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

11And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. 12Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 13And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. 14And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. Behold, they which are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts. 26But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

27This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 28For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 29And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. 30But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

46My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. 47Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. 48And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. 49And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgives sins also? 50And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
