45 Days To Read the Gospel Challenge. The Gospel of Luke Chapter Four – How To Overcome Temptations and Know the Power of God
Overview of The Gospel of Luke
Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts. Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time disciple Paul was in jail. His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary. Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order. His primary research was eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Luke knew the disciples personally. He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark, as a lot of his work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.
Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation of Mary. He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ: Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

45 Days to Read the Gospel Challenge. The Gospel of Luke Chapter Five – The Lord Did Not Come For The Righteous, But Sinners to Repent
Overview of Chapter Five
In this lesson, we will journey through Jesus’ early miracles and teachings by the lake and in nearby cities. We’ll explore how Jesus called His first disciples, healed people, and demonstrated His authority to forgive sins. Through parables and interactions with His followers, Jesus reveals His purpose and mission. This class will encourage students to see how Jesus’ compassion and power inspire faith and how His invitation to “follow Him” leads to transformation.
Jesus was by the lake of Gennesaret when He saw two boats, with fishermen cleaning their nets nearby. Simon Peter, along with James and John, had been fishing all night without catching anything. Jesus stepped into Simon’s boat and told him, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
Although doubtful because they hadn’t caught anything, Simon obeyed. Suddenly, the nets filled with so many fish that another boat had to help with the load. The fishermen were amazed, and Jesus told them they would now become “fishers of men.” They left everything to follow Him.
Later, Jesus went into a city where a man with leprosy approached Him and asked to be healed. Jesus spoke, and the man’s leprosy disappeared. Jesus instructed him to tell no one, but to show himself to the priest as a testimony. Crowds began gathering around Jesus, seeking to hear His teachings and be healed.
One day, while Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers from all around Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem were present. The power of the Lord was with Him to heal. A paralyzed man was brought on a mat, but due to the crowd, his friends lowered him through the roof to place him before Jesus.
Seeing their faith, Jesus forgave the man’s sins. The Pharisees questioned, “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” To show His authority, Jesus told the man, “Rise up and walk.” The man stood up, and everyone was amazed, saying, “We have seen incredible things today.”
Later, Jesus saw Levi, a tax collector, and invited him to “Follow me.” Levi left everything to follow Jesus. To celebrate, Levi held a feast at his home with many tax collectors and others. The Pharisees questioned why Jesus ate with sinners, and Jesus replied, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” When asked why His disciples didn’t fast like others, Jesus explained through a parable, saying that while He was with them, fasting wasn’t needed, but once He left, they would fast and pray.
Jesus replied, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Chapter Highlights
Chapter Highlights of Gospel According to Luke – Chapter Five KJV) Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions.
A. How Jesus called Peter, James, John, and Levi into discipleship. Luke 5:1-11 KJV
1And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
2And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
3And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people out of the ship.
4Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless, at thy word, I will let down the net.
6And when they had this done, they captured a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
7And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came and filled both the ships so that they began to sink.
8When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
9For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all and followed him.
12And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
13And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.
14And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
15But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
16And he withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed.
17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
27And after these things he went forth and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
28And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
B. How Jesus showed the people he had the power to forgive sins. Luke 5: 18-25 KJV
18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in and to lay him before him.
19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
20And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
22But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
23Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
24But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
25And immediately he rose up before them and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
26And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things today.
C. The reason Jesus ate with publicans and sinners. Luke 5: 27-32 KJV
27And after these things he went forth and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
28And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them
30But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need, not a physician; but they that are sick.
32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Call to salvation:

Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
