Step Two.  Each lesson takes about 35 minutes to complete: 20 min to study the lesson and take the quiz. 15 minutes to read the Bible resource

It is recommended to read the entire post and then take the quiz before reading or listening to the bible resources. Each lesson is self-contained and includes all resources needed.

Step 3:  You should complete two lessons a day.  5 Days a week in order to complete the “45 Days to Read The Gospel Challenge in 45 days”.

Overview of The Gospel of Luke

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research is based on eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark’s work. A lot of Luke’s work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation to Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich people, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

Summary of The Gospel According to Luke Chapter Twenty Two: Jesus Betrayed With A Kiss: Beware of Backstabbers

In this lesson The Gospel of Luke Chapter 22, we will learn that The captains, priests, and scribes conspire against Jesus and arranged with Judas ( a disciple of Jesus) to pay for Jesus’ betrayal.  Jesus is betrayed with a kiss;.  In the meantime, Jesus and his disciples observe the Passover, and then Jesus is captured.

Jesus and his disciples observe the Jewish Passover which involved two religious observances over the course of eight days: The Sacrifice of Passover (sacrifice of animals) and the Feast of Seven Days (eating unleavened bread). The Passover is a religious celebration for the Jews that is demanded by God for them to observe every year. 

The Jews were led out of slavery in Egypt by Moses and the strength of God.  God parted the Red Sea so the Jews could escape. 

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives as he did often to pray.  He returned and the disciples were sleeping because of their sorrow.  Jesus warned them to always pray so they do not yield to temptation. He told them to take with them on their journeys weapons, clothes, shoes, and money. 

While he is with them they do not need these things as his spirit keeps them but he is leaving to be crucified.  Note: Later after his death, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to comfort them. He reminds them of Jesus’s teachings, and to give the disciples power. John 14:16, John 16:7

Jesus advised the disciples of how important it is to be of a humble spirit.  It should be noted that historians have noted that Moses, a man who had a very personal relationship with God,  was known as a very humble man.  

Jesus partakes of the last meal that includes the Passover “Feast of Unleavened Bread” and a ritual with the disciples.   This ritual is famously called “The Lord’s Supper” which Jesus commanded to be observed from that day forward in remembrance of him. Drinking of the wine to represent his flesh and eating of the unleavened bread that represents his body.

Anyone not worthy cannot participate in this ritual.  Exdous 12:42 explains the method in which the Passover is to be observed. Today, Christians all over the world celebrate some form of the Passover and partake in the Lord’s Supper.  

At the dinner, Jesus tells Simon that the devil asked to swift him like wheat.   He prayed for him to be strong and not fail.  Simon Peter swore his loyalty to Jesus.  However,  Jesus informs him that he will deny him three times. Later, after Jesus is captured, Simon Peter does deny Jesus three times to his own shame. 

Peter could not understand this because he loved Jesus.  Jesus’ insight tells us he knows us better than we know ourselves. He also knows the future. God is predestined.

Jesus is betrayed with a kiss.  When the troops come to get Jesus, Judas leans to kiss Jesus in order to identify him to the troops so they may take him. Jesus asked Judas, Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?  He could have shaken his hand but used an intimate kiss instead.  Jesus knows about betrayal. 

The leaders of Jesus’ father’s house came with the darkness.  The chief priest and captains of the temple (God’s house) came to arrest Jesus with weapons.  Luke 22:52 -53  ⁵²Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? –⁵³When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour and the power of darkness. 

Jesus is brought to the High Priest’s house (father-in-law of the Chief Priest)  and is mocked and struck in the face by people who captured him. The next day, Jesus is taken into the council of the elders of the people and chief priests and the scribes who question him. They determine that Jesus thinks that he is the Son of God making himself equal to God and that was blasphemy punishable by death.

Reflection and Discussion

This chapter demonstrates that Jesus knows how people in our closest confidence can betray us and the worst betrayal is a friend with a knife behind his or her back.  Romans 12:9 KJV  Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.  Can you think of a time a friend or relative betrayed you? How did it feel? Did you give the situation to God to handle?   Do you wish you had handled the situation differently? If so, how?

Backstory:  Jesus and his disciples observe the Passover which involved two observances over the course of eight days: the sacrifice of Passover (sacrifice of animals) and the Feast of seven days (eating unleavened bread). Note: Here Judas makes a deal for money to betray Jesus.  In addition, the Priests who pride themselves on being men of God are against Jesus. The last Betrayal is of Simon Peter who denied knowing Jesus three times. It is important to note that Jesus predicted that these things would happen before they did proving the power of God is predestined.

 

Judas –    Luke 22: 1-7KJV,  Luke22:46-48 KJV ¹Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. ²And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. ³Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. ⁴And he went his way and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. ⁵And they were glad and covenanted to give him money. ⁶And he promised and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. ⁷Then came the day of unleavened bread when the Passover must be killed.      ⁴⁶And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. ⁴⁷And while he was speaking, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. ⁴⁸But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betray thou the Son of Man with a kiss?

And Peter said, Man, I am not. ⁵⁹And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilean. ⁶⁰And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he spoke, the cock crew. ⁶¹And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. ⁶²And Peter went out and wept bitterly.

 

 

D.  How Jesus was able to accept the will of the father — that Jesus should die by crucifixion.  Luke 22: 41-44 KJV

⁴¹And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, ⁴²Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. ⁴³And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. ⁴⁴And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
