Overview of The Gospel of Luke

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research is based on eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark’s work. A lot of Luke’s work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation to Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich people, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

Summary of The Gospel According to Luke Chapter Sixteen

In chapter sixteen, Jesus tells two parables and reproves the covetous Pharisees on adultery.  The first parable demonstrates how we should make friends. The second parable tells of the consequences of living spiritually bankrupt when we are not faithful to God’s laws concerning our riches. Last but not least, Jesus reproves the covetous Pharisees by telling them he knows their hearts.  In addition, he tells them divorce can create the sin of adultery.

The first parable concerns an unjust steward of a rich man who is accused of squandering the rich man’s money.  The unjust steward decides to help the people by letting them pay half the bill owed to his master. He forgave the rest of the debt so that he may be accepted by the people when he is fired by his master.  Jesus did not approve of the unjust steward but commended his wise thinking to look out for himself.

Jesus states that the children of the world are shrewder in this matter than believers.  They make friends help themselves out down the road.  Jesus simply demonstrated that believers are to use their wealth to invest in the Gospel, and bring sinners to salvation so that the converted sinners will be eternal friends and will greet them in heaven.  Make friends for yourselves that will encourage you in the Lord and be there for you when you need help. Note: Jesus called the bill collector unjust. He did not approve of him but wanted believers to make friends that will help them later.

Luke 16:10, 13 10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. Note: The steward was very unjust until the end.   13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Note:  This passage demonstrates that people who have gone on before you will greet you when you arrive at the gates of heaven. Many people who have died for hours in hospitals often tell the story that they saw loved ones come for them.  This passage proves it is possible.

In the second parable, Jesus tells of a beggar, Lazarus, who laid outside the gates of a rich man’s house.  When Lazarus died, the angels carried him to the Bussum of Abraham.  The rich man died and went to hell.  The rich man asked for water and none was given nor mercy.  He asked that his five brothers, who were still alive, be told by Lazarus, a dead man, of the fate that could await them.  Abraham told him that if they did not believe Moses and the prophets they would not believe a dead person.

The Devil is in the Details

The Devil is in the Details

This story supports the scripture, John 8: 42-47″ The truth is not in them that do not receive the words of Moses or the prophets. Therefore, they will not receive the truth because they want to please their father, Satan.  The father of lies.” The rich man was spiritually bankrupt when he lived his good life not caring for those less fortunate.  The consequences of living such a life sent him to hell.

Jesus reproves the covetous Pharisees:  Luke 16: 15, 18  15And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men, but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.  18Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery: and whosoever marries her that is put away from her husband committed adultery.

If a couple divorces over anything other than adultery and this does not include irreconcilable differences because many forgive affairs, as far as God’s law is concern they are still married and bound by the marriage law. If either spouse marries another, that spouse is committing adultery.  Note: This is the reason many Christian religious leaders will not marry divorced people. However, some do. Before Jesus arrived with grace, divorce was not allowed at all.

Chapter Highlights of Gospel According to Luke – Chapter Sixteen KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions

A. Why we should invest our money in the Gospel to save sinners in order to make eternal friends. Luke 16:8-13  KJV

8And the lord commended the unjust steward because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. 9And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.  10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches12And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? 13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Note:  Jesus did not approve of the unjust steward but commended his wise thinking to look out for himself. The children of the world are shrewder in this matter than believers.  They make friends to help themselves out down the road.  Jesus simply demonstrated that believers are to use their wealth to invest in the Gospel, and bring sinners to salvation so that the converted sinners will be eternal friends and will greet them in heaven.  Make friends for yourselves that will encourage you in the Lord and be there for you when you need help.

B. The consequences of living a spiritually bankrupt life. Luke 16:19-31 KJV

19There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. 22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented

26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou would send him to my father’s house: 28For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

C. The reason highly esteemed people among men are an abomination in the sight of God.  Luke 16:13-17 KJV

13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 14And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. 15And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. 16The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man press into it. 17And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one title of the law to fail.

D. How can divorce produce the sin of adultery.  Luke 16:18 KJV

18Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commit adultery: and whosoever marries her that is put away from her husband commits adultery.
