Overview of The Gospel of Luke
Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts. Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time Paul was in jail. His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary. Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order. His primary research is based on eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Luke knew the disciples personally. He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark’s work. A lot of Luke’s work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.
Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation to Mary. He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich people, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

Summary of The Gospel According to Luke Chapter Sixteen
In this lesson, we will explore two parables told by Jesus, focusing on the wise use of wealth, the dangers of spiritual neglect, and the consequences of greed. You will also learn how Jesus reproves the covetous Pharisees and addresses the sin of adultery in relation to divorce. Through these teachings, we will understand the importance of being faithful to God’s laws and living with eternity in mind.
In Luke Chapter 16, Jesus tells two parables and rebukes the Pharisees for their greed and self-righteousness. The first parable is about an unjust steward who, after being accused of wasting his master’s wealth, decides to reduce the debts owed to his master in hopes of securing favor with others once he loses his job.
While Jesus does not condone the steward’s dishonesty, He praises his foresight in planning for the future. This parable serves as a lesson for believers to wisely use their resources to advance God’s Kingdom, ensuring that their investments lead to eternal friendships in heaven.
Jesus underscores the importance of faithfulness, teaching that “He who is faithful in little is also faithful in much” (Luke 16:10 KJV). He further warns that no one can serve two masters, saying, “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Luke 16:13 KJV).
The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, scoffed at Jesus, but He rebuked them, exposing their hypocrisy and greed by saying, “God knows your hearts; what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God” (Luke 16:15 KJV). Jesus reproved them for justifying themselves before men while neglecting true faithfulness to God.
The second parable contrasts a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus. While Lazarus suffered in life, he was carried to Abraham’s bosom after death, while the rich man, who ignored the needs of others, was sent to hell.
From his place of torment, the rich man begged for mercy and for his brothers to be warned, but Abraham replied that if they did not listen to Moses and the prophets, they would not be convinced even if someone were to rise from the dead (Luke 16:31 KJV). This parable demonstrates the lasting consequences of living a selfish, spiritually bankrupt life, and the importance of caring for the less fortunate.
This story also supports the scripture John 8:42-47 KJV, where Jesus teaches that those who do not receive the words of Moses or the prophets are following the lies of their father, Satan. The rich man, in his life of luxury, chose to ignore the truth, leading him to eternal separation from God.
Finally, Jesus addresses the sin of adultery, emphasizing the sanctity of marriage. He says, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery” (Luke 16:18 KJV). This teaching reinforces that, in God’s eyes, a marriage remains binding unless it is broken by adultery. If a couple divorces for any other reason, such as irreconcilable differences, and either remarries, they are committing adultery.
This chapter teaches that faithfulness in the little things reflects our faithfulness in larger matters, and that the choices we make in this life have eternal consequences.

Chapter Highlights of Gospel According to Luke – Chapter Sixteen KJV) Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions
A. Why we should invest our money in the Gospel to save sinners in order to make eternal friends. Luke 16:8-13 KJV
1 accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
2And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.
3Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.
4I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
5So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?
6And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
7Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.
8And the lord commended the unjust steward because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.
9And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.
10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
11If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
12And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?
13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Note: Jesus did not approve of the unjust steward but commended his wise thinking to look out for himself. The children of the world are shrewder in this matter than believers. They make friends to help themselves out down the road. Jesus simply demonstrated that believers are to use their wealth to invest in the Gospel, and bring sinners to salvation so that the converted sinners will be eternal friends and will greet them in heaven. Make friends for yourselves that will encourage you in the Lord and be there for you when you need help.
B. The consequences of living a spiritually bankrupt life. Luke 16:19-31 KJV
19There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores.
22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and see Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented
26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou would send him to my father’s house:
28For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
C. The reason highly esteemed people among men are an abomination in the sight of God. Luke 16:13-17 KJV
13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
14And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.
15And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
16The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man press into it.
17And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one title of the law to fail.
D. How can divorce produce the sin of adultery. Luke 16:18 KJV
18Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commit adultery: and whosoever marries her that is put away from her husband commits adultery.
