Overview of The Gospel of Luke:

Apostle Luke, a Gentile and a physician, wrote this Gospel and the Book of Acts.  Luke’s work is assumed to be written in AD 60-62 during the time Paul was in jail.  His works were dedicated to Theophilus, a Roman dignitary.  Luke gives an ordered account of the events of Jesus’s life but not necessarily in order.  His primary research is based on eyewitnesses, disciples, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Luke knew the disciples personally.  He traveled with Paul most of the time. However, he also used other disciples’ work in his research, such as Mark’s work. A lot of Luke’s work included the Gospel of Mark. However, this Gospel gives many accounts of Jesus’s healing ministry because Luke was a physician himself.

Luke alone reported unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and the annunciation to Mary.  He emphasized the central role of women, children, Gentiles, Samaritans, rich people, sinners, and outcasts in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Luke proposed to narrate the ministry of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ’s mission dedicated to the saving of sinners and his progression to the cross to become Savior of the World.

45 Days to  Read the Gospel Challenge. The Gospel According To Luke Chapter 12: What’s In The Dark Will Come To The Light

Summary of The Gospel According to Luke Chapter Twelve :

As Jesus was gathered together with an innumerable multitude of people, he spoke to the disciples to beware of the Pharisee’s hypocrisy.  Luke 12: 2-5 “2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light, and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.  4Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.”

Jesus proclaimed Luke 12:8-10 8Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God. 9But he that deny me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.  10  10And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. Jesus warned the disciples that when they are brought unto synagogues, and powers that they should not worry. The Holy Spirit will teach them what to say that very hour.

The Lord warns against storing treasures on earth. Luke 27-29  27 Consider the lilies how they grow; toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  28If then God so clothes the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?  29And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

Luke 12 30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added unto you.  32Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 3333Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approached, neither moth corrupteth. 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The Lord advises his servants to watch, act for the kingdom, and pray. Luke 12:40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. Jesus tells a story of servants that take care of the house when the master is away and the difference of the servants who slack because the master is away and he shows up expectantly.  The faithful and wise believer who manage the spiritual riches God has put in his care for the benefit of others, and careful management of the master’s house is pleasing unto God. To which more is given and does well more will be given and much required.  Be watchful so when he comes for his bride, the servant is doing and is ready.   The servant who knew his master’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes by his master.

Luke 12: 51- 53 51Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Note:  this passage clears up the meaning of Jesus’ statement about dividing people.  Matthew 10 34-38 34Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. 37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me is not worthy of me. 39He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

56Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? 57Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? 58When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hales thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. 59I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

Be a good stewardess over yourself and others. Make things right so you do not go to court by knowing right from wrong, If you go to court for not paying a bill and thrown into jail, Jesus tells them they must pay every cent before getting out.  I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite -mite equates with money.  Jesus says he has a baptism to attend. This baptism in the Christian faith symbolizes identification with him in death, burial, and resurrection.

Mark 12:41-44  41And Jesus sat over against the treasury and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. 42And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 43And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury44For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she cast in all that she had, even all her living.

Reflection

Do you often wonder about people who do not value truth nor care about right or wrong? Do they seem to get away with everything?  Jesus tells us that all things in darkness will come into the light. That includes gossip. Are you familiar with “You reap what you sow?” or What goes around come around?  Jesus paid the price for our sins so we are forgiven in order to go to heaven but many sins will  “reap what you sow.”

Chapter Highlights of Gospel According to Luke – Chapter Twelve KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions

A.  What is meant by What’s in the dark will come into the light? Luke 12: 11-6 KJV

1In the meantime, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples, first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. 3Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light, and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. 4And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. 6Are, not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

B. The unforgivable sin. Luke 12: 8-9 KJV

8Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

C.  Why we should store our treasures in heaven and not worry about worldly things. Luke 12: 12-28 KJV

17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. 22And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

23The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. 24Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 25And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? 26If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? 27Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28If then God so clothe the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

D. Why Jesus coming will divide people and families. Luke 12:51-53, Matthew 10: 34-38 KJV

51Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth?

E. What signs of the times are to be regarded.  Luke 12:54-59 KJV

54And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. 55And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
