Overview of The Gospel of John

One of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee, wrote the Gospel of John, which is 21 chapters long. John is known as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus Loved.” Biblical scholars believe that John wrote this gospel around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after witnessing Jesus’ earthly ministry. John was an eyewitness to the events he describes in the gospel, and he wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. (Note that John is not the same person as John the Baptist, who is discussed in this book.)

The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation, revealing his divinity as the Creator of the world, the Father (I AM), and the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh. Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God, believers should understand that he is also the Son of God who came in the flesh. While we were still sinners, Jesus died for our sins and rose again to become the Savior of the world, reconnecting us to God. This is why we pray to the Father in Jesus Christ’s name.

By shedding his blood and sacrificing his life, Jesus defeated death and sin and gives us the gift of everlasting life through repentance and forgiveness. As John 3:16 KJV says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God is omnipresent, meaning that he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.  Revelation 19:6 KJV says, “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

Isaiah 9:6 KJV“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

45 Days To Read The Gospel Challenge. The Gospel of John Chapter One: The Deity and Humanity of Jesus Christ

Objective: Chapter One-What you will learn:

You will learn the Identity of Jesus Christ before and after his human birth.

Overview:  The Gospel of John Chapter One:

In this chapter, John the Baptist, a man sent by God, witnesses to Jesus Christ. John the Baptist is also known for speaking in praise of God as a newborn, an event that was widely discussed.

This chapter states that Jesus was and is the creator of the world before he was born in the flesh of a woman, and that he was the prophesied child born of a virgin, the Son of God in the flesh—the Messiah. He was and is the Messiah that the earlier prophets declared as the one man who would die for the nation so that the nation would not die. The book of Isaiah is the most accurate prophecy of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the Word that became flesh. He is the Son of God (flesh) and he is God (I AM) before creation.

John 1:1-5 KJV

    • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
    • He was in the beginning with God.
    • All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
    • In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
    • And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:10-11 KJV

    • He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and yet the world did not know him.
    • He came to his own, and his own received him not.

Editor’s Note: In many bibles that are various versions from the King James, this scripture,  John 1:3 KJV  is quoted:  All things are made through him.  However, the 1907 King James Version bible linked to above, as well as King James Bible Online, states “all things were made by him”. Some versions of various bibles state, “all things were made by him, through him, and for him”.

Time: 45 minutes to complete lesson: 30 minutes to read the entire post and take the interactive quiz, additional 15 minutes to read the bible chapter.

Reflection and Discussion Questions: Something to think about.  Post all comments below in the comment section or on ePrayer Circle’s new social media Instagram or  Facebook

The fact that Jesus was willing to die for our sins shows us how much he loves us. He was not willing to simply let us suffer the consequences of our own actions. He was willing to take the punishment upon himself so that we could be forgiven.

This sacrifice is not just a historical event. It is something that has personal implications for each of us. If we repent of our sins and turn to Jesus Christ in faith, we can be forgiven and receive the gift of everlasting life.

Here are some questions to think about:

  • What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ came to earth as a human being?
  • Why do you think Jesus Christ died on the cross?
  • How does the sacrifice of Jesus Christ change the way you see God?
  • How does the sacrifice of Jesus Christ change the way you see yourself?
  • What does it mean to you to repent of your sins and turn to Jesus Christ in faith?

  1. Michelle Lane says:

Jesus Christ is the Son of God in the Flesh and he is God, the Father(I AM). Jesus Christ created the world before he was born in the flesh. This seems confusing to a lot of people but if they remember that God can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth and heaven. This is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ name. I liked the lesson. It is IMPORTANT and short. Love the video. I didn’t read it, I listen to it on my phone

  2. Mimi says:

This is nice. Thank you. Sometimes we forget how powerful our God really is. Too much crazy in the world right now.

  3. Danny says:

It clearly stated that Jesus Christ created the world. He is the son of God in the flesh and the Father I AM.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
