Overview of The Gospel of John:

The Gospel of John is written by one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee. This Gospel is 21 Chapters long.  John is described as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus loved”.  It has been determined by biblical scholars that John wrote The Gospel of John (also known as “According to John”).

It was written around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after he witnesses Jesus’ earthly ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and as an eyewitness in composing the gospel. He is not John the Baptist. However, in this book, John the Baptist is discussed.

The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation. It establishes his deity as Creator of the World, The Father (I AM), and is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh. Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God (I AM), believers are to understand that Jesus is the Son of God that came in the flesh and yet while we were sinners, died for our sins and rose again to become Savior of the World-reconnecting us to God. That is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ’s name.

Defeating death and sin by the shedding of his blood and life, Jesus gives the gift of everlasting life with repentance. That by believing you may have life in his name (20:31)  John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  God is omnipresent meaning he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.

Revelation 19:6  “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thundering, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,

Overview of the Chapter Twenty One:

Jesus, who has risen, is on a shore and see the disciples in a boat. This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples. The disciples have unsuccessfully caught fish to eat.  Jesus calls to them and tells them to throw the net to the other side of the boat.  More fish than their nets can handle jump into the nets.  A second boat of disciples help them take the fish to shore. The disciples’ dinner has been prepared and is ready. Jesus has dinner with them.

Jesus decides to test a disciple’s love for him and tells him to feed his sheep. To another he says “follow me”.  At this point, the disciples do not dispute anything about Jesus Christ. Their faith is made unshakable. One disciple asks about another disciple, whom had betrayed Jesus. “What is he to do?” Jesus responds, “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?”  Jesus demonstrates that God’s business is not man’s business as far as judgement.

Reflection and Discussion

Can you think of a situation in which someone tried to inject themselves into your private conversation with someone else or your personal business?  Jesus establishes that his relationship with each of us is one on one. No one can get saved for you and you will not get into heaven on a recommendation. You represent yourself, and you will be judged on your own merits.  Post all comments below in the comment section or on ePrayer Circle’s new social media Instagram or  Facebook. eprayercircle.com

Chapter Highlights of Gospel of John – Chapter Twenty One  (KJV)  Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions.

A. Jesus appears to the disciples. He performs another miracle and shows his power.  He has risen from the dead. John 21 1-14

1After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself

2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.

3Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

4But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

5Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

6And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

8And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.

9As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.

10Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.

11Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

12Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.

13Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

14This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

 B. He dines with the disciples and  gives them their tasks.  He defines he is in charge and they are not to question his thinking toward another disciple.   John 21: 15-24 KJV

15So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, loves thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou know that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

16He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, loves thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou know that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

17He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, loves thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Love thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou know all things; thou know that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

18Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou was young, thou girded thyself, and walked whither thou would: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou would not want to go.

19This spoke he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

20Then Peter, turning about, sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betray  thee?

21Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do

22Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

23Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

24This is the disciple which testifies of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
