Overview of The Gospel of John:
The Gospel of John is written by one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee. This Gospel is 21 Chapters long. John is described as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus loved”. It has been determined by biblical scholars that John wrote The Gospel of John (also known as “According to John”).
It was written around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after he witnesses Jesus’ earthly ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and as an eyewitness in composing the gospel. He is not John the Baptist. However, in this book, John the Baptist is discussed.
The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation. It establishes his deity as Creator of the World, The Father (I AM), and is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh.
Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God (I AM), believers are to understand that Jesus is the Son of God that came in the flesh and yet while we were sinners, died for our sins and rose again to become Savior of the World-reconnecting us to God. That is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ’s name.
Defeating death and sin by the shedding of his blood and life, Jesus gives the gift of everlasting life with repentance. That by believing you may have life in his name (20:31) John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God is omnipresent meaning he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.
Revelation 19:6 “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thundering, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Overview of Chapter Sixteen
Jesus talks with the disciples telling them the hour has come for him to go unto the Father. They will be sad but on his return they will rejoice. Jesus tells his disciples of what is to come so they may have peace about it. He tells them that the world hates him and will hate them. They will be put out of churches and some killed by people who think they are doing a service to God.
He is leaving but will return to them. He will send the Comforter to them (also known as the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit) who will guide them into all truths. The Comforter shall hear and speak and show them things to come. He glorifies Jesus. He receives from Jesus and will show it unto them.
He will reprove the world of sin, righteousness, and of judgment. The prince of this world is judged condemned. He assures them peace, to be of good cheer because he has overcome the world.
Jesus prays for the disciples and all believers before his crucifixion. It is a famous prayer. Jesus (himself) states that Satan is the Prince of This world. Jesus does not refer to Satan as a God. Jesus also states that he was with the Father before the world was created. John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Highlights of Gospel of John- Chapter Sixteen (KJV) Answers to Objectives and Activity-Questions.
A. The situations that the disciples will face after Jesus leave them to go unto the Father. John 16: 1-7(KJV)
1These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever kill you will think that he does God service.
3And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you ask me, Whither goes thou?
6But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
B. The roles of the comforter and his many names. Jesus explains that he will go away. John 16: 8-15 (KJV)
8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
C. Jesus explains his leaving and returning and how they will feel about it. John 16: 16-24, 31-33 (KJV)
16A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
19Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
20Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
Jesus tells them the hour has come. He tells them he is telling of what is going to happen in that they will have peace. They will not be alarmed. He tells them they will have many sorrows and trials but be not afraid. He has overcome the world.
31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
D. Jesus tells them all things his Father has also belongs to him. Whatever they ask the Father in his name, The Father shall do. John 16: 15, 24-30.
15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Jesus tells the disciples that once he is gone (completed work of the cross) he will show them the father. Then they shall ask in his name and he shall answer as the Father. He came from the father and will return unto the father.
24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
26At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27For the Father himself loves you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speaks thou plainly, and speaks no proverb.
30Now are we sure that thou knows all things, and needs not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou came forth from God.
