Overview of The Gospel of John:
The Gospel of John is written by one of Jesus Christ’s disciples, John, the son of Zebedee. This Gospel is 21 Chapters long. John is described as the “Disciple of Whom Jesus loved”. It has been determined by biblical scholars that John wrote The Gospel of John (also known as “According to John”).
It was written around A.D. 80-90, about 50 years after he witnesses Jesus’ earthly ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and as an eyewitness in composing the gospel. He is not John the Baptist. However, in this book, John the Baptist is discussed.
The Gospel of John explains who Jesus Christ is before creation. It establishes his deity as Creator of the World, The Father (I AM), and is the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God in the flesh.
Its purpose is to explain that even though Jesus is the Creator and God (I AM), believers are to understand that Jesus is the Son of God that came in the flesh and yet while we were sinners, died for our sins and rose again to become Savior of the World-reconnecting us to God. That is why we pray to the father in Jesus Christ’s name.
Defeating death and sin by the shedding of his blood and life, Jesus gives the gift of everlasting life with repentance. That by believing you may have life in his name (20:31) John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God is omnipresent meaning he can be in more than one place at the same time. He can be on earth (flesh) and in heaven (spirit) at the same time.
Revelation 19:6 “And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thundering, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Overview of Chapter Ten
In this lesson, students will explore John Chapter 10, where Jesus describes Himself as both the Good Shepherd and the Door. Through parables, Jesus explains His role as the only way to salvation and the protector of His people. Students will learn about Jesus’ love for His followers, His sacrifice on the cross, and His divine connection to God the Father. This lesson will deepen students’ understanding of Jesus’ identity and mission.
In John Chapter 10, still near the Mount of Olives, Jesus speaks to the crowd following the healing of a blind man. He explains that He is both the Door and the Good Shepherd, emphasizing that He alone provides salvation and protection. Jesus contrasts His care with that of a hired hand who abandons the sheep at the sight of danger. Unlike a hired hand, the Good Shepherd willingly sacrifices His life for the sheep, symbolizing Jesus’ work on the cross, which brings eternal life and forgiveness.
Jesus also hints that His mission extends beyond the Jewish people, welcoming others into God’s family. This claim sparks division among the Jews; some view Jesus as a blasphemer, while others believe His miracles show He is truly the Son of God. When the Jews threaten to stone Him for saying, “I and the Father are one,” Jesus escapes beyond the Jordan, where many come to believe in Him.
Objectives Chapter Ten (You will learn…)
A. Identify the significance of Jesus as the “Good Shepherd” and the “Door” to salvation.
B. Explain how Jesus’ parables illustrate His role as the sole path to eternal life and protection for believers.
C. Understand the importance of Jesus’ sacrifice and His power over life and death.
D. Describe the varied reactions to Jesus’ claims among the Jews and what this reveals about His identity as the Son of God.
Outline of Chapter Ten
- Jesus is the door and the good shepherd that knows his sheep by name.
- A division among the Jews concerning him.
- Jesus explains how his works prove him to be the Son of God.
- He escapes from the Jews and goes again beyond Jordan; where many believe him.
Reflection and Discussion

Do you spend time reading the Bible, talking with Him, praising Him, and praying in Jesus’ name? Do others know about your faith?”

Highlights of Gospel of John- Chapter Ten (KJV) Answers to Objectives and quiz.
A. The personal relationship Jesus has with his followers John 10: 1-5 KJV
John 10: 1Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
2But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
4And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
5And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
6This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
B. Jesus is the only way to the Father and the term he uses to demonstrate this. John 10: 7-12 KJV
7Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
8All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
9I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
11I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
12But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
13The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
14I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
15As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
Note: Here Jesus hints that other people outside of Jews will be given the offer of salvation. Some people think this scripture (16) applies to other universes and worlds. However, scripture tells us man is over the earth.
C. Jesus predicted his sacrificial death and resurrection. The completed work offering everlasting life and the forgiveness of sins to all who may receive it. John 10: 17-18 KJV
17Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
18No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have the power to lay it down, and I have the power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
19There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.
20And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?
21Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
22And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.
23And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.
24Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
D. The reason the Jews wanted to kill Jesus John 10: 25-33 KJV
25Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.
26But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
30I and my Father are one.
31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
32Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Note: (30) I and my Father are one. The Jews considered that statement blasphemy. They looking at Jesus who is a man and did not like his comparison of himself to God.
