Independence Day, known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States which commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.
The Founding Father delegates of the Second Continental Congress declared that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer subject (and subordinate) to the monarch of Britain, King George III and were now united, free, and independent states. The Congress voted to approve independence by passing the Lee Resolution on July 2 and adopted the Declaration of Independence two days later, on July 4.
Congress debated and revised the wording of the initial Declaration, removing Thomas Jefferson’s vigorous denunciation of King George III for importing the slave trade, finally approving it two days later on July 4.
Galatians 5:1 KJV “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Click picture to see video on YouTube – English and Espanol.
Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, poitical speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.
The Bible does not specifically mention Independence Day or the celebration of national holidays like the Fourth of July, as these events occurred long after the biblical texts were written. However, the Bible does provide principles that can be applied to such celebrations:
- Giving Thanks and Celebrating Freedom: The Bible encourages believers to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Celebrating Independence Day can be seen as an opportunity to give thanks for the freedom and blessings enjoyed in one’s country.
- Honoring Authority: Romans 13:1-7 teaches Christians to respect and honor governing authorities, as they are established by God. Celebrating national holidays can be a way to honor the history and leaders of one’s country.
- Remembering God’s Provision: Throughout the Bible, God’s people are reminded to remember His deeds and provisions (Deuteronomy 8:2). National holidays can be a time to reflect on how God has guided and provided for the nation.
- Unity and Peace: Ephesians 4:3 encourages believers to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Celebrating national holidays can foster a sense of community and unity among people.
- Freedom in Christ: Galatians 5:1 speaks about the freedom believers have in Christ. While national freedom is significant, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual freedom given through Jesus Christ.
In conclusion, while the Bible does not specifically mention Independence Day, it provides principles of thanksgiving, honoring authority, remembering God’s provision, promoting unity, and celebrating freedom that can be applied to the celebration of holidays.

Romans 10:9-10 9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation
John 3:5-6 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is the Spirit.
